Students Explore Local Career Options

GEAR UP students got the opportunity to learn about different careers by visiting John Deere and Principal Financial on April 29. At John Deere, they toured the facility and met with staff, learning about different career and educational routes - including internships, apprenticeships, and two- and four-year degree programs.

At Principal Financial's Ottumwa office, they learned about various IT positions. The staff they met with were all graduates of Indian Hills Community College's Computer Programming program. Students learned there is no pay difference for new hires that have a four year verses a two year degree. Students were encouraged to consider the IHCC program if interested in IT careers, as well enrolling in STEM courses in high school.
