180 Days - Kitchen Staff Play Santa

The kitchen staff presented a check to Natalie Dommer as Principal Mark Hanson looks on.

The season of giving came early for Ottumwa High School drama.

Friday morning, the OHS kitchen staff surprised Natalie Dommer with a check for $500. Dommer is the Director of Theater as well as a teacher in the English department at OHS.

For the past four years, the kitchen staff  have pooled their money together to support an OHS club or organization instead of hosting a department gift exchange. “I’m tired of dusting stuff,” said Becky Stout, kitchen manager. The staff put their heads together in early December to select a needy group.

Dommer had no idea that her activity had been picked this year. “This is exciting ladies,” she shared upon hearing the news. “Oh my gosh!”

Dommer will use the funds to offset royalty costs for next fall’s musical, “The Addams Family.” The royalty fees will be approximately $3,000.

“My son is in drama so I know exactly what it takes,” said Joani Madrid, who works in the kitchen.

“These kids put a lot of time and effort into their activities,” said Teressa Schmitz, another kitchen employee. “Many are here early and stay late.” Past clubs the 15 kitchen employees have supported include the OHS band and JROTC program.
