180 Days - Running a Family Tradition

With several first place cross country wins under her belt, Ottumwa High School junior, Kylie Latham, credits her success to her coach and her mom.

Latham started running in seventh grade, following in the footsteps of her sister. Her mom was also a runner who started competing in ultramarathons. “She does really great things with running,” she said. “I thought it was neat she could do it.”

Coaching has helped her reach her running goals. “We have an amazing coach,” Latham said of Angela Chaney. She also credits her team mates. “We have a lot of girls who like to work hard.” Workouts include hill work, intervals (alternating between two speeds) and fartleks (running fast intermixed with periods of slower running).

When she isn’t running, she is doing homework or playing with her cats. “I’m taking a lot of college classes, that’s where all my time goes,” Latham said. She hopes to continue her running career at the next level.

Her future plans include majoring in biomedical engineering at Iowa.
