The Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation has awarded $30,000 to the Ottumwa High School marching band to help defray student costs to march in Hawaii on December 7. The award was made possible through the foundation's Bright Ideas Community Enrichment Fund which supports the promotion and public awareness of human services, recreation, art, cultural, and humanities needs and issues of the City of Ottumwa and Wapello County.
The OHS marching band, Pride of Ottumwa, will march in the annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade. Over 90 students and two band directors will represent Iowa on this national stage. The band has also been invited to perform on the deck of the USS Missouri and lay a wreath at the USS Arizona Memorial.
The band started fundraising last school year after being invited to participate. All fundraising will be used to reduce the cost per student. To date, over $70,000 has been raised.
