Ottumwa High School JROTC Cadet, Alexis Young, was recognized by the Ottumwa Board of Education at Monday’s meeting.
Young is part of a Color Guard squad that participates in a variety of events in Ottumwa and surrounding communities when honor is showed to the United States flag. Recently, the Blakesburg community was recognizing a World War II veteran who had recently passed away. Young assisted the widow in raising the flag. The Color Guard then participated immediately following.
According to Jerald Van Dalen, who had requested assistance from JROTC, “The World War II veterans from the Blakesburg area attended and observed the touching ceremony. Cadet Young’s leadership, demeanor, and personal attention to detail reflected very favorably on the JROTC program.”
“Young is a power hitter,” Chief John Wynn shared with the Board. “Whatever I need, she is one of the first persons to raise her hand.”
