Library Project Serves as Class Final

Students in the Woods class at OHS built libraries for their semester test.

The project came about when James teacher, Tracey Cormeny, asked if the class could construct several boxes to be used for the Little Free Library project. The project is based on the “take a book, return a book” concept. Boxes will be installed at several Ottumwa elementary schools, including James, Horace Mann and Eisenhower. Students can share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share.

OHS teacher, Ron Downing, used the project as the class final. Students demonstrated several skills learned during their semester in class. The boxes were constructed of wood and have shingled roofs. Each school will then paint and stain the boxes, decorating it to either match their environment, their school name, and a literature theme.
