Students Learn about STEM Careers at ISU

Last week, eight students from Ottumwa High School attended the “Taking the Road Less Traveled” career exploration conference at Iowa State University. The conference is sponsored each year by the Program for Women in Science & Engineering. Conference goals include:  promote interest in science, technology, engineering and math; increase confidence in pursuing STEM fields; expand awareness of STEM careers; and reinforce the importance of science and math courses. Students were mentored by Mackenzie McCoy, an OHS graduate and a junior at Iowa State.

“I knew I was interested in some sort of engineering or possibly music but now I will focus on getting a larger skill set when it deals with computer technology,” said Jennifer Culver, an OHS sophomore. “Preparing for college will probably include seeing if I can take courses at Indian Hills to help set myself up for success. It was a great experience and I would definitely recommend for anyone who isn't sure what they want to do after high school.”
