Students attending the Accelerated College Academy (ACA) recently completed two service projects. The projects are part of the Teen Outreach Program (TOP), sponsored by American Home Finding and facilitated by Jenna McAfee.
Their first project involved making tie blankets for the Heartland Humane Society. The blankets will be used in kennels for the animals. “The students really seemed to enjoy the project,” said McAfee. “Several students stated it was fun.”
They showed their appreciation for teachers with the second project. Students put together baskets with everything a teacher needs, according to the students. The baskets were given to the staff at the ACA.
The TOP program is an evidence-based program that meets weekly. The program is designed to empower teens with tools and opportunities needed to avoid risky behaviors. The main component of TOP is Community Service Learning, but students also discuss subjects such as healthy relationships; values and goal setting; and abstinence. This is the fourth year for the program.
