Mock Caucus at OHS

Mock Caucus at OHS

On January 26, hundreds of students at Ottumwa High School will participate in a mock caucus during their lunch. The "Corn Caucus" is being sponsored by Sedore Farms, the FCS department, and Mr. Guest's government class.

Students in American Government have been learning about political ideology, what is a caucus, and candidate viability. Students have volunteered to "stump" for their candidate on video announcements to inform other students of which candidate they should support for the next president of the United States. Student voters will each get one kernel of corn to put in a jar with the name of their candidate. This will be done during lunch, and students who vote will be given lollipops.

This mock caucus is part of the statewide 2016 Iowa Youth Straw Poll program being conducted by Iowa Secretary of State, Paul Pate.
