Students in Principals of Engineering took a field trip to Ottumwa Regional Health Center on Wednesday to see the robot technology that Dr. Jeff Bittner uses in surgery. Students had the opportunity to learn about new technologies and the branch careers that come from this like engineering, business, sales and training,
Dr. Bittner talked to students about how the robot is used, demonstrated how the robot works, and then let students take the controls and manipulate the robotic arms.
According to da Vinci web information, “the daVinci Surgical System is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand the surgeon’s capabilities and offer a state-of-the-art minimally invasive option for major surgery. Small incisions are used to insert instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. Seated comfortably at a computer console, the surgeon views a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site. At the same time, the latest robotic and computer technologies scale, filter and seamlessly translate your surgeon's hand movements into precise micro-movements. Although it is often called a 'robot', the da Vinci cannot move or operate on its own. The surgeon is 100% in control.” (http://www.davincisurgery.com)
