Learn to Speak a Language

Jim Langland

Ottumwa native and OHS alumni, Jim Langland, was a guest speaker in French III this week.  Langland is co-owner of American Professional Quilting Service, a manufacturing company of quilting machines based in Carroll, Iowa. Foreign language assists him in business and personal settings. He learned French in high school and speaks German, Portuguese, Spanish, and bits of other languages learned through private tutors and some courses at Indian Hills.

"He was a delight to have as a guest speaker," said Melissa Simonson, French teacher at OHS. "He reinforced some of the basic concepts that language students need to hear, such as interest, diligence, and patience. He talked about phrases that help in conversation not specifically taught in a textbook, and some subtle pronunciation differences in French that help to improve a person's accent."
