Sewing Project Meets Community Need

Sewing Project Meets Community Need

Groups of students were busy working on pinning parts together, sewing seams, and deciphering pattern directions recently. The goal:  to make sweatpants for preschoolers as part of their Family Consumer Science class at OHS.

Five classes at OHS are doing productive group work while sewing a project to meet a community need. The students recently completed individual sewing projects. Now they are learning to work together as part of a team and produce a product in assembly-line fashion. Each person has specific tasks. As a group, they problem solve to fix mistakes. "Students learn interdependence which is a skill needed in many other relationships in life," said Colette Fisher, FCS teacher.

This is not the first time sewing students have tackled a community need. In the past, projects have included chair bags for nursing home residents, backpacks/string packs for students, sweatpants for kindergarten students, and dog coats for Heartland Humane Society.

The project puts all their recently learned skills to the test, said Chase Kaller, a freshman. "It's a great feeling helping someone out," he said.
