Zulema Argueta was recently awarded the Pursuing Victory With Honor at OHS. Argueta is in the Early Childhood Occupations (ECO) program and has also been a member of Future Educators of America for four years. Because of her desire to be a teacher, she was placed in Mr. Larry Zuelhke's classroom at Evans for her classroom observation experience in ECO.
During her observation, she identified three students who were new to the country that were struggling with the language. While math is considered universal, story problems were difficult for them. Two of the students were struggling with math as well. With permission from Mr. Zuelhke and the principal, Argueta started an after school program three days a week to tutor these students in math and reading. They have responded well to her as a peer mentor because they really want to learn.
Just this fall, she gave up her job to allow for more time to focus on her classes. She wants to do well to better her chances for scholarships. "It is because she cares so much about these kids that she is using this time to assist them," said Colette Fisher, the teacher who nominated her for this award. Fisher is a teacher in the Family and Consumer Science Department.
