Alexis Young, an Ottumwa High School freshman, was recently selected as Cadet of the Quarter for second quarter.
Each quarter, Platoon Leaders nominate one cadet from their platoon to appear before the Bulldog Battalion Cadet of the Quarter Board. This is a formal board conducted by senior cadets with the battalion executive officer presiding as president of the board.
Cadets appearing before the board will be in good standing in the battalion, academically eligible with an A in JROTC and have no accumulative demerits. They will be inspected in uniform and questioned on general JROTC academic knowledge and current events. Each cadet nominated will be awarded five merits from the Senior Army Instructor. Winning cadets will receive promotion to the next highest rank, the N-1-10 Cadet of the Quarter Ribbon, 10 merits, and a framed certificate signed by the OHS Principal and Senior Army Instructor. Quarterly winners are eligible to compete for the Cadet of the Year.
At Evans Middle School, Young was in the Tomorrow’s Leaders program where she learned the basics of leadership. “I talked to Chief Reinier the day I came to OHS for the block party,” she said. “He told me I would do an excellent job in JROTC. I wanted to take a class that would get me somewhere in life and teach me to be a better person and leader. JROTC showed me that I can succeed in something I never thought possible.”
