Alex Reeves knows what kids like and she knows how to get it for them.
A Girl Scout since second grade, Alex (daughter of Scott and Lori Reeves) has spent a lot of time on projects that benefit the community. But her favorite projects always involve kids. “I really enjoy working with children,” shared Alex, a junior at Ottumwa High School. “Especially doing things that make them feel better.”
Alex had an idea to create “bedtime bags” for children who are patients in the pediatric unit of Ottumwa Regional Health Center. Each of the 36 bags contains an activity book with pencils and markers, a toothbrush, toothpaste, playdough, a small flashlight and a stuffed animal. In addition, girls get a flower crown and boys a superhero cape. The project was funded through a United Way Youth grant for $400 that Alex applied for and was awarded.
Alex presented her bedtime bags to some very appreciative nurses at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. After graduation, Alex will attend college and pursue a career in pediatric healthcare, so she can continue doing her two favorite things, working with children and helping them feel better.
