Connecting Students to Jobs

Connecting Students to Jobs

Students at Ottumwa High School lined up to find out about area jobs today during the OHS Job Fair.

The fair, held in collaboration with Vocational Rehabilitation, provided students the opportunity to build a resume and work on their interview skills, said Angela Jones, a transition coordinator at OHS. Over 10 businesses presented information about their business prior to students talking individually to the businesses they were interested in. Businesses included Manpower, Vista Woods, Cargill Meat Solutions, Goodwill Industries, Pizza Ranch, Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drug, and the Ottumwa Community School District.

“In today’s economy, it’s important to get youth in jobs,” said Sam Jacobs, an OHS junior. He hopes a part time job with a local company will provide an opportunity for full-time employment.

Carrie Jaeger, as associate recruiter for Manpower, was excited about the opportunity to talk with students. “I love stuff like this,” she said. “The fair helps students realize how many jobs are available in the area.”

Two students hope to land a job in the healthcare field. “This is a good opportunity for students,” said JoHanna Rupe, an OHS senior. She talked to three potential employers, including Vista Woods. OHS junior, Austin Wheaton, also talked to Vista Woods. “The fair is a good idea,” he said. “It gives students the chance to get a job.”

While a few students were nervous about speaking to business representatives, the day was designed as a safe option to connect students with potential employers.
