Vocal Music

Encouraging Stronger Vocalists
Students begin singing as a choir in the elementary and intermediate schools. As they enter into sixth grade, various styles of music and techniques are introduced. Instructors emphasize proper breathing techniques, matching pitches, projecting, and using good posture.

As students continue in the program in grades seven and eight, the emphasis shifts to the development of sound vocal techniques and the development of singing voices. Individuals and small ensembles may be featured in these grades. There is at least one concert performance a year.

Seventh and eighth-graders also have an opportunity to perform in the select Middle Notes ensemble. This group performs in three to five middle school vocal concerts/events throughout the year, as well as possible requested singing engagements. A wide range of choral literature is prepared for performances: sacred, secular, seasonal and popular music. Middle Notes provides an excellent opportunity for serious students to gain extra voice training. Choreography is used with this group.

At Hoover High School, students can participate in a Freshman Choir, a Women's Chorale and Symphonic Choir. As student progress through the program there is a stronger emphasis on the details of choral singing. In addition, there is a select women’s ensemble, Hi Notes, as well as the Hi-Lo's, a select mixed show choir that competes nationally. Choirs at every level perform in concerts throughout the year, and the high school program puts on a large-scale musical.

A long-standing North Canton tradition, the May Fiesta features a variety of theatrical-style performances and highlights all ensembles in the district as well as musical numbers by the seniors.
