Center for Disease Control

Stark County experienced 12 suicides of middle and high school students between August 2017 and March 2018. The suicide rate among young people rose to 7 times the national average and 11 times Stark County’s rate from 2011-2016. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was asked to examine the factors that contributed to this increase, and a school-based survey was administered to identify the factors that contributed to the suicidal behaviors, as well as the factors that can protect against suicide. North Canton City Schools participated in the survey of students in grades 7-12. The CDC has released the results of the countywide survey and has shared opportunities to prevent future suicides. We feel it’s important that NCCS parents and community members are aware of the report’s findings.
