Dear Families and Guardians,

              As we approach the end of the school year, please make sure all OP books are returned. In-person students may bring to school. Online students can return books at supply pick-up- Wednesday, June 2nd or Thursdays starting May 27^th.  Please notify the school if books are missing.  More information will be shared about returning school computers. Although the school year is coming to an end, we are still learning and assignments in the afternoon should be completed each day. We often have some time to begin assignments, and these will still need to be finished and turned in. If your child needs help with an assignment, they may login zoom office hours from 12:45-1:15 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  The zoom link can be found on the front page of our Schoology course.

Reading – Unit 8: Determining Important Ideas continued. In this unit, students focus on determining important ideas in text to better understand and remember what they read. They also make inferences, visualize, and identify what they learn and wonder as they hear and discuss read-alouds from a variety of genres.  

Writing- This week we wrapped up another round of informational writing. Students selected a state, researched, and wrote an informational piece. For this, students were expected to include qualities of informational writing including a beginning which got readers ready to learn a lot of information about the subject, use transition words to connect ideas, write endings that drew the writing to a conclusion, group information, provide relevant text features, and follow rules for capitals, punctuation and spell correctly. To finish the school year, we will continue to work on writing summaries for reading and review narrative writing.

Math- Unit 6-Area & Perimeter and Unit 5- Word Problems … We will finish out the school year with these last units. Currently, we are working on Unit 6: Area and Perimeter. Students begin to investigate the area of a rectangle by counting the number of square units inside the figure. Students also find the perimeter by counting the linear units around the outside of the figure.

Students develop methods to find perimeter and area of a rectangle.

Students draw rectangles that have the same perimeter but different areas and rectangles that have the same area but different perimeters. They discover the relationship between perimeter and area, such as that for the given area, the longest, skinniest rectangle has the greater perimeter and the rectangle with sides closet to the same length or the same length has the least perimeter. Throughout the unit, students will apply what they have learned about perimeter and area to real world problems.

Unit 5:  Types of Word Problems… In this unit, your child will solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems involving unknow addends and factors.

*If one of the addends is unknown, it can be found by subtracting the known addend from the total or by counting on from the known addend to the total.

*If the total is unknown, it can be found by adding the addends.

*If one of the factors is unknown, it can be found by dividing the product by the other factor.

*If the product is unknown, it can be found by multiplying the factors.

 Math Mountains are used to show a total and two addends. Students can use the Math Mountain to write an equation and then solve the equation to find the unknown.

Equations with numbers alone on the left are also emphasized to help with the understanding of algebra.

Comparison Bars are used to solve problems that involve one amount that is more than or less than another amount. Drawing Comparison Bras can help a student organize the information in the problem in order to find the unknown smaller amount, the unknown larger amount, or the difference.

Dear Families and Guardians,

  As we head into our third week of in-person learning, please remind students following safety measures is still important. Remind them to wear masks, stay 6 feet apart, and do not share school supplies. If your child needs masks or school supplies, please encourage them to talk to me or message me in Schoology.  We will get what they need!  You may still check out books from the school library. Students can order and pick up on Thursdays. Please encourage them to read daily. 

  The next supply pick-up will be … Wednesday, May 3rd from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.  Please call office to arrange a time to pick-up supplies. If you are unable to do so on Wednesday.  In addition, starting this Wednesday we will extend zoom to 10:45 am.  This will allow me to hold individual reading conferences. Reading conferences will give me insight into students’ strengths and areas for growth. Knowing this can better information instruction and support reading growth. Also starting this week, I am reinstating office hours. If your child needs help with an assignment, they may login zoom office hours from 12:45-1:15 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  The zoom link can be found on the front page of our Schoology course.

  Finally, please encourage your child to login to Schoology in the afternoon to complete any assignments not completed during class as well as any independent work.

Our first week back after Spring Break has been a whirlwind. Thank you for all your support and patience as we transition once again.  😊   Given the change, we have taken some time to establish norms and new procedures (especially Roomers) but are somewhat ready to dive back into academics. Here’s a peek into what’s ahead…

Reading – Unit *: Determining Important Ideas. In this unit, students focus on determining important ideas in text to better understand and remember what they read. They also make inferences, visualize, and identify what they learn and wonder as they hear and discuss read-alouds from a variety of genres.   

Writing- We’ll be stepping away from expository writing soon return to Opinion Writing. Dear Families and Guardians,

    Thank you all for your flexibility this week. There have been many changes with preparations for in-person learning beginning on Monday, April 12^th.  If you are in-person, please contact the OP office and let them know how your child will arrive and leave school each day. This will greatly improve our ability to make arrival and dismissal times more efficient. You can reach the office at 425.366.3300.

Zoomers… (or online distance students)

Please have sign-in to Zoom and Schoology at 9:00 am. I will be greeting in-person students (roomers) at the same time, so there may be additional wait time before class begins.  A morning work assignment will be posted in Schoology. As always, click the week work folder to open the day’s work folder. The morning work assignment will be posted. Video instructions have been included but if there is an issue or question, you may have your child read using Raz-kids or Epic. Both will be linked in the assignment along with usernames and passwords. As I am ready, I will open the meeting and begin class. For the beginning days, please expect some delays. Zoomers will have breaks at 10:00 am and 10:50 am. They will end around 11:45 am.  Supply pick-up is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14^th 3:00pm to 5:30pm. There are small items in the science bags that could be a choking hazard for younger children. Please help your child find a safe spot to keep until ready to use.

Roomers… (in-person students)

Please make sure attestation forms and temperature have been completed before arrival. This will assist in less wait times for drop-off and class start time. If you are in-person, please contact the OP office and let them know how your child will arrive and leave school each day. You can reach the office at 425.366.3300. Students with a Good-to-Go pass will be directed to the classroom. As they arrive, they will turn in their pass, wash hands, unpack and login to Schoology to begin morning work. As we expect start delays, we will begin once most students have arrived. Mask breaks are scheduled for 10:00 am and 10:50 am. Students may use bathroom between 9:15 am and 11:30 am. Students are encouraged to use during non-instructional times, but exceptions are made for emergencies. There is no eating or drinking in the classroom. Students are permitted to drink water during mask breaks. Water fountains at school are not available, so students may bring their own water bottles. These must be returned home and filled at home. Water access will only be available for handwashing. At 11:40 am, roomers will begin to pack-up for dismissal.  Supplies will be sent home on Tuesday, April 13^th. There are small items in the science bags that could be a choking hazard for younger children. Also, we will not use these materials right away. Please help your child find a safe spot to keep until ready to use.

ALL STUDENTS…

Most assignments will be started during class and will need to be finished in the afternoon. Additional independent assignments for Science and Social Studies will be posted in Schoology. Please watch instruction and lesson videos before attempting work. For now, I will be suspending office help hours in the afternoon. Please message me with questions until I can restart the office hours. Specialist time is moving to the afternoon. Specialist will now meet on Tuesdays and Fridays @ 1:30-2:00pm. Afternoon groups will continue as usual unless otherwise notified.

I know there are a lot of changes ahead. I will do my best to keep you all up to date. Please feel free to message me if you have questions.

  Please read below for important schedule changes next week…  

We will continue with our regular schedule on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 am to 12:00pm and Office Hour help from 1:15 pm to 2:15 pm.  The schedule next week will be adjusted to prepare for in-person.  On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, students will meet with Ms. Moser.  On Wednesday, Ms. Moser will meet at 9:00 am. On Thursday and Friday, the meeting will begin at 10:00 am. This will be a shortened meeting to go over expectations, ask questions, and review assignments. This new link will be posted in our Schoology course on Tuesday evening.

  Here’s what’s happening next week….

Reading – Unit 7- Questioning/ Wondering with Questioning/ Wondering… During this unit, students use the strategy of wondering/ questioning to help them understand expository nonfiction as they continue explore the comprehension strategy Questioning/ Wondering.  

Writing- This week we begin Expository Writing. Students will write an expository/ informational piece on a topic of their choice. Students will have a chance to research this topic and write an about the topic.  Students will also apply text features such as table of contents, glossary, etc. in this writing piece. Text features are common in expository text and help readers locate and understand the information learned.    Here is an example of informational writing.

Math- Unit 3- Pictographs, Bar Graphs, and Line Plots …  The remaining lessons of unit 3 will focus on showing information in various ways. Students will learn to read pictographs and bar graphs. They will organize and display data in frequency tables and line plots. Student sill also learn how to use graphs to solve real world problems.  Here are some examples of graphs we will be using.

You can help your child learn by sharing graphs that appear in newspapers, magazines, or online.  Additionally, you support by continuing to discuss time especially elapsed time and basic multiplication and division facts.

Daily assignments- Reading, Writing and Math assignments and discussions are posted. If your child has not yet completed and/or submitted work, please remind them to complete Schoology schoolwork daily allowing for flexibility and breaks. Posted work is due the Sunday at midnight to allow time to complete before the new week begins. Students should expect to read every day at least 30 minutes.  Raz-kids and Epic are reading resources if you need additional reading material.

Library Curbside Pickup- Students may check out school library books by filling out a book request form in Schoology or emailing the librarian, Ms. Le at LeAM@mukilteo.wednet.edu.   Please look for reminder messages for the next pickup dates to get your books.

Thank to all that were able to pick up supplies this week. If you didn’t, no worries! You can still contact the school office and set up a time for pick up.  The next supply pick up will be in April. Just a reminder that zoom school is from 9:00 to 11:30 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Here’s what’s happening next week….

Reading – Next week Unit 6 continues. This 4-week unit begins our work with expository nonfiction. During this unit, students use text features to better understand information in expository nonfiction texts. They hear and read expository nonfiction texts, explore text features and how they will better support them in their reading. Nonfiction plays an important role in learning as student progress through the elementary grades. Students must be able to read and understand both narrative nonfiction- biographies, memoirs, etc. and expository texts. Expository texts include textbooks, newspapers, online and print articles. Some text features discussed in this unit include- back-cover summaries, table of contents, indexes, keywords, glossaries, text boxes, etc. Students will notice these text features and use to help them better locate, understand, and use the information learned in these expository texts.  If possible, try reading more expository text during IDR.    

Writing- We have been doing a mini-review of Personal Narrative. A personal narrative is a true story taken from the writer’s life. The personal narrative should be written in order, have details and transition words. As with all writing include capitals and punctuation where it belongs. As wrap this review, we will work on our next writing unit… Expository or Information Writing.  

Math- In math, your child is beginning lessons about time. This topic is directly connected to home and community and involves skills your child will use often in everyday situations.

Students are reading time the the hour, half-hour, quarter hour, five minute and minutes as well as describing the time before the hour and after the hour. For example, you can read 3:49 both as after and before the hour… Forty-nine minutes after three or Eleven minutes before four. Students will also solve problems about elapsed time. Dear Third Grade Families,

    Here is the latest information for our class.  Please let me know if you have questions. Just a friendly reminder that next week is mid-winter break. No new assignments will be posted next week. However, feel free to complete past assignments and/or work on Moby Max or Prodigy. Login and password information will be available on Schoology. Of course, please continue to make time for reading. Epic and Raz-kids are available throughout next week too! Finally, you may request school library books. Check out the information below to see how to do that. The next supply pick-up will be March 2^nd from 3:00-5:30.

    To prepare for report cards, students will take the Star Reading and Math test. As earlier, we will complete the test on zoom. If possible, please assist your child in finding a quiet spot to test. Please do not assist with answering any of the questions. You may help find the test and trouble shoot technology issues. Star reading will be administered Thursday, February 25^th. Star Math will be completed Thursday, March 4^th. Please allow for about an hour for each test. Individual reading assessments will also be given and scheduled one-on-one with students.  As possible, please have students attend class daily.  Thank you for all your help and support.

This will allow me to observe what they understand about opinion writing and what they are working on.  Dates for the next writing unit will be announced later. However, we will most likely launch the Expository writing unit sometimes after winter break.

Reading – Unit 4 continues…This unit has students use wondering/questioning to help them understand fiction. They learn to think about whether their questions about the stories are answers directly, indirectly, or not at all by the text. In addition, they continue to practice visualizing and making inferences. During IDR (independent daily reading), students continue to practice using these strategies and confer with the teacher individually about their reading.   

Writing- Beginning the week of January 18^th, students will begin our Opinion Writing Unit. Students will explore and write persuasive essays defending opinions as they explore elements of opinion writing. They brainstorm topics they have strong opinions about, and each student selects an opinion to write about. The students learn to identify an audience and purpose for their essays, state their opinions and support them with reasons, and use transitional words and phrases to connect opinions with reasons. They write clear, direct introductions and conclusions that restate their opinions, and they practice relevant skills and conventions, such as correcting sentences fragments and using adjectives to make their essays more persuasive. They confer in pairs and revise their essays.

Math- Unit 4: This unit will focus on activities that help them understand place value, rounding, and addition and subtraction of 3-digit numbers. Place value drawings are used to represent numbers with drawings that show how many hundreds, tens and ones are in the numbers. Hundreds are represented by boxes. Tens are represented by vertical line segments, called ten sticks. Ones are represented by small circles. The drawings are also used to help students understand regrouping in addition and subtraction. Here is a place value drawing for the number 178.

  The 7 tens and 8 circles are grouped in 5s so student can see the quantities easily and avoid errors.   Estimate sums and differences- Students will learn to estimate sums and differences by rounding numbers. They also use estimates to check their actual answers are reasonable.  

Addition methods: Students may use the common U.S. method. In this method, students add from right to left and write the new ten and new hundred on the line. Students also use proof drawings to demonstrate grouping 10 ones to make new tens and grouping 10 tens to make a hundred.                

Subtraction methods: Students may use the common U.S. method in which the subtractions done right to left, with the ungrouping done before each column is subtracted.  Students may also use proof drawings to demonstrate ungrouping.

Happy Friday!

FYI- Winter break begins Friday, December 18^th.  Friday will be a shortened day. Our zoom class will continue as scheduled and a few activities will be posted in Schoology due to the shortened student workday. As part of our author’s chair, students may come to class in their PJ’s for a cozy read aloud or share of our Personal Narratives.  Please continue to read regularly. Access to Epic and Raz-kids will be available through winter break.

They learn to think about whether their questions about the stories are answers directly, indirectly, or not at all by the text. In addition, they continue to practice visualizing and making inferences. Conferences will be done via Zoom November 23, 24 and 25^th.  No school for student during this week. However, I am recommending students continue to read daily for at least 30 minutes and work on unfinished Schoology assignments next week.  Students in grades 3-5 will NOT have a scheduled supply drop in December. For safety, students in these grades will pick up any supplies next time. You may still request school library books.

Reading – Review making inferences and summarizing. Before jumping into our next reading unit on Questioning and Wondering, we will do some review work on summarizing and making inferences. Using some of our previous stories, students will have an opportunity to write a summary. For each summary, students will need to include the important parts of the story including story elements like character, setting, problem, solution and ending. They will identify each part and then use to write a short summary paragraph. Please make sure to include capitals and periods where they belong. An attached video will demonstrate writing the summary. If you need, please view before attempting the assignment.   

Writing- The coming week we will begin a unit on Personal Narratives. During this four-week unit, students explore the genre of personal narrative and write about significant topics and events from their lives. They explore the characteristics of a good personal narrative, including sensory details, temporal words and phrases, engaging openings, and effective endings. The students practice relevant skills and conventions, such as correcting commonly misused words. They hear, discuss, and write personal narratives. 

Math- This week we continue with Unit 2: Multiplication and Division continued. In this unit, students learn multiplications and divisions for 6s, 7s, and 8s, while continuing to practice the rest of the basic multiplications and divisions covered in Unit 1. Although students practice all the 6s, 7s, and 8s multiplications they really have only six new multiplications to learn: 6 x6, 6x7, 6x8, 7x7, 7x8 and 8x8. The lessons for these multiplications focus on strategies for finding the products using multiplications they know. This unit also focuses on word problems. Students are presented with a variety of one-step and two-step word problems. Here is an example of a two-step word problem:

A roller coaster has 7 seats. Each car has 4 seats. If there were 3 empty seats, how many people were on the roller coaster?

Students use the language and context of each problem to determine which operation or operations- multiplication, division, addition, or subtraction- they must use to solve it. Students use a variety of methods to solve two-step word problems. Please continue to help your child get faster on multiplications and divisions. Your support is crucial to your child’s learning.

Conferences will be done via Zoom November 23, 24 and 25^th. I will be sending out an online sign-up form. Please sign-up as soon as possible. Conferences, as usual, will be no student days and a shortened report card will be used for these conferences.

Starting next week, we will be extending our class time to 10:00-11:30. This will allow me to confer and meet with students. Students will also continue to have opportunities to ask questions and get support for their work.

Reading – We wrap up unit 3: making inferences. In this unit students explore characters, a key element of narrative text structure. They make inferences to understand characters’ traits and feelings as well as how they develop and change. Las conferencias se realizarán a través de Zoom  23, 24 y 25^{de noviembre.}. Enviaré un  formulario de registro en línea. Por favor, regístrese lo antes posible. Las conferencias, como de costumbre, no serán días de estudiante y se utilizará una tarjeta de informe acortada para estas conferencias.

Happy Friday!

November 3^rd – November 10^th – I will have a guess teacher. If you have any questions or need help, please message and email Chrystie Phillips … PhillipsCL@mukilteo.wednet.edu  Mrs. Phillips will managing the Schoology course and all zoom meetings.

There will be a supply pick-up November 5^th between 12-5pm.  Conferences will be done via Zoom November 23, 24 and 25^th. I will be sending out an online sign-up form. Please sign-up as soon as possible. Conferences, as usual, will be no student days and a shortened report card will be use for these conferences. Veteran’s Day is November 11^th. No school November 11^th.  

Reading – We continue unit 3: making inferences. In this unit students explore characters, a key element of narrative text structure. They make inferences to understand characters’ traits and feelings as well as how they develop and change. They come to understand that stories are about characters, the problems they face, how they deal with those problems, and how they change as a result. Sometimes character change is dramatic; at other times character change can be as subtle as a realization or a new perspective. This is a 5-week unit so we will be working on making inferences through November. 

Writing- This week we wrapped up writing unit 1 and 2 on the writing community and writing process.  I have definitely enjoyed reading student’s stories. Nice work everyone! For the first few weeks of November will focus on journal writing. Students will have journal topics to write about. There will be options for submitting handwritten writing or writing on the computer. The focus of this will be to continue to build stamina for writing on a regular basis. Beginning the week of November 16^th, we will launch a writing unit on Personal Narratives. During this four-week unit, the students explore the genre of personal narrative and write about significant topics and events from their lives. They explore characteristics of good personal narrative, including sensory details, temporal words and phrases, engaging openings, and effective endings. The students practice relevant skills and conventions. This unit continues through December.

Math- As unit 1 has end, we move on to Unit 2: Multiplication and Division continued. In this unit, students learn multiplications and divisions for 6s, 7s, and 8s, while continuing to practice the rest of the basic multiplications and divisions covered in Unit 1. Although students practice all the 6s, 7s, and 8s multiplications they really have only six new multiplications to learn: 6 x6, 6x7, 6x8, 7x7, 7x8 and 8x8. The lessons for these multiplications focus on strategies for finding the products using multiplications they know. This unit also focuses on word problems. Students are presented with a variety of one-step and two-step word problems. Here is an example of a two-step word problem:

A roller coaster has 7 seats. Each car has 4 seats. If there were 3 empty seats, how many people were on the roller coaster?

Students use the language and context of each problem to determine which operation or operations- multiplication, division, addition, or subtraction- they must use to solve it. Students use a variety of methods to solve two-step word problems. Please continue to help your child get faster on multiplications and divisions. Your support is crucial to your child’s learning.

Daily assignments- Reading, Writing and Math assignments and discussions are posted. If your child has not yet completed and/or submitted work, please remind them to complete schoolwork daily allowing for flexibility and breaks. Posted work is due the Sunday at midnight to allow time to complete before the new week begins. Students should expect to read every day at least 30 minutes.  Raz-kids and Epic are reading resources if you need additional reading material.

Library Book for Grades 3-5: Students in grade 3-5 can request books by placing titles on hold using the library catalog or fill out a book request form. They do not do both. If they know what books they would like, then they use the catalog. If they need recommendations, they use the request forms. Next week…

Small groups begin next week…  Beginning this Wednesday, I will be offering two intervention sessions focusing on multiplication and division concepts from unit 1.  These intervention sessions will be offered to students from 9:05-9:20 and 9:30-9:45. Students may attend both sessions.  We will use the same class meeting zoom link for interventions. We will probably be using whiteboards, so please have whiteboards and markers handy before logging in.

They learn procedures for proofreading for spelling and conventions using a resource. They write final versions of their writing and present to other author’s in our class.  

Math- Next week we will be wrapping up unit 1. Unit 1 review and test will be next week. Please be prepared to ask questions and show what you have learned from unit 1 of math.  If you have not been keeping up with math lessons and assignments, you can check for those assignments by clicking on grades along the left side on Schoology’s front page. Now that Star testing is completed, we will resume our regular 10:00-11:00 schedule. Class meeting will be 10:00-10:30, followed by a short break, then math practice and number talk. La próxima semana...

Lectura – La próxima semana comenzamos la unidad 3: haciendo inferencias. En esta unidad los estudiantes exploran personajes, un elemento clave de la estructura del texto narrativo. Hacen inferencias para entender los rasgos y sentimientos de los personajes, así como cómo se desarrollan y cambian. Llegan a entender que las historias son sobre los personajes, los problemas que enfrentan, cómo lidian con esos problemas y cómo cambian como resultado. A veces el cambio de carácter es dramático; en otras ocasiones el cambio de caracteres puede ser tan sutil como una realización o una nueva perspectiva. Esta es una unidad de 5 semanas, de modo que vamos a trabajar en hacer inferencias hasta noviembre. 

Escritura- La próxima semana comenzamos la unidad 2: el proceso de escritura.  En esta unidad, los estudiantes aprenden sobre el proceso de escritura trabajando con piezas de escritura desde sus primeros borradores hasta la publicación. Seleccionarán un borrador para desarrollarlo y publicarlo. Happy Friday!

If you didn’t make it to pick a supplies Wednesday, you can pick supplies up in the office from 9-4pm. 

Reading – We continue to explore visualizing as a reading comprehension strategy to help us better understand our story and self-monitor. Students will have a chance to practice visualizing and connecting to the text with a few great read-alouds. In addition, we’ll begin to explore inferring by describing how characters feel.

Writing- We continue to explore the work of professional authors to learn from them what we can do to generate ideas to write about. Next, we will explore the writing process. We’ll take a finished draft through all the steps of the writing process including revising, editing and publishing.

Math- Lessons and assignments will work on building fluency for multiplications and divisions for 2s, 5s, 9s and 10s. Students will also work on solving and writing equations for word problems. This week we will also learn about 3s multiplications and divisions and use the area model for multiplications.

Star testing will continue next week with Math. We will follow the same testing plan and have small groups of students test after the shortened class meeting time. Any make-up testing will take place as we go and be completed the week of October 19^th.  Student’s testing days will remain the same, so if your child took the first test on Monday, they will test Math on Monday as well. Please see schedule in Schoology.  If available, please assist your child in logging in only and not to answer any questions, to obtain the most accurate information.

Daily assignments- Assignments and discussions are posted daily in Schoology for reading, writing and math.  If your child has not yet completed and/or submitted work, please remind them to complete schoolwork daily allowing for flexibility and breaks.  Posted work is due the Sunday at midnight to all time to complete before the new week begins. Hello families!

We will be taking the Star Reading test beginning Monday, October 5^th.  Students will take the test in small groups of 4-5 students after the class meeting. Testing groups will remain on the class meeting Zoom and begin the test after others have exited. Testing should begin around 10:35. Test length varies but plan for at least 30-45 minutes for the test. Students will exit the meeting once the assessment is complete.  The same schedule and procedure will be used for Star Math testing scheduled to begin the week of October 12^th.  Finally, reading assignments in Schoology will be modified given testing this week. Math assignments will be modified the following week during math testing. Please let me know if you have any questions!

  The next supply drop is Wednesday, October 7th from 12:00-5:00pm.

Hello families and students!

    Here's what's planned for next week...

Reading- We will begin Unit 2 on Visualizing. During this unit, student visualize to make sense of poetry and fiction. As they visualize, they informally use schema and make inferences. They will also begin an informal exploration of point of view as they consider the thoughts and feelings of characters in relation to their own. During IDR, students will continue to self-monitor and practice visualizing. 

Writing- We will begin unit 1 on the writing community. The focus of this unit will be to build a writing community. Students will begin to hear and discuss examples of good writing and begin to learn about the writing practice of professional authors. They will explore prewriting techniques and write freely to build stamina for writing. 

Math- We will continue unit 1 on multiplication and division. In lessons, this week we will work on multiplying and dividing by 2 and building fluency for 2s and 5s. If able, we will take our first math quiz for lessons 1-6. 

*Beginning the week of October 5th, we will begin to administer the Star test. We will be testing in small groups of 5 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, after our class meeting. We will be administering the test over Zoom to ensure testing procedures. Please do not assist your child in answering any of the questions. Knowing what your child learning needs are is critical to my work with them and I need information of what they are able to do without assistance. If able, please help by ensuring a quiet testing place and minimize distractions. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hello again!

   Congratulations on completing the first full week of school. For sure there were bumps along the way and probably more to come but I so appreciate your stick-with-it-attitudes and your willingness to persevere over any challenge. I firmly believe that we can do this if we stick together.  

  For next week...

   We will continue to slowly add in curriculum and will begin Math curriculum. Our first unit will run until about October and will focus on multiplication and division. Strategy cards or flash cards were sent home. I will be posting some homework routine to use with them or other math resources to practice the facts. Also, if your child has not yet installed and explored Kami. Please do. Here's a link for information on that app.  Kami  and How to use Kami to complete assignments. 

   Speaking of technology... You received a district message regarding technology support. There have been many reports of issues with Goggle Drive and Google docs but hopefully these problems have been solved. If problems continue, please contact the Technology Service Desk through the online request form or at 425.356.1207, Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. 

  Finally, in an effort to provide additional academic support, I will be adding an afternoon time for office hours. Office hours would allow students to join me in a Zoom call and get additional support. I will post the link and meeting ID along with the password in Schoology. For now, starting next week (9/21/20) my office hours will be from 1:15-2:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I am still developing my schedule so times may change and I will keep you all posted on Wednesdays.
