MGSD 2021 - 2022 Calendar Information

At the January 12, 2021, Board of Education meeting, the MGSD Board voted to approve calendars for the 2021-2022 school year. Due to uncertainty around the calendar law at the state level for next school year, the board voted on three calendars, with Option #1 being the calendar of choice.  Option #2 and #3 are alternate calendars should the NC General Assembly pass legislation again this session with additional mandates or changes.

As a district, we believe that Option #1 is in the best interest of students and how they learn:  1) There are breaks throughout the year for our students; 2) It gives flexibility to our families to take vacations when the weather is milder and costs are down; 3) Fall break, winter break, and spring break align with our local community college; 4) First semester finishes before winter break which is extremely important for our high school students who will finish finals before break and can start their new courses following break; and 5) Students do not have to return to school following Memorial Day, unless they are taking part in summer classes.

Option #2 is based on the interim calendar law the General Assembly passed last summer adding the mandatory remote learning days and a start day of August 16.  When that legislation was passed, it was specific to the 2020 - 2021 school year.  We do not know if they plan to pass similar legislation this year; however, we wanted to be prepared.  Under Option #2, we can still finish exams prior to winter break and finish the school year before Memorial Day.

Option #3 is based on the idea that the General Assembly could change some of the exemptions/language that currently exists in the School Calendar Law.  This calendar looks very similar to the calendar we followed prior to 2019.  We believe Option #3 is not in the best interest of children.  It mandates that schools cannot start earlier than the closest Monday to August 26.  This late start means we cannot finish exams prior to winter break, pushing the start of second semester deep into January, and the end of the school into the second week of June.

As a point of clarification, the intersession/summer school dates will be utilized for remediation, AP bootcamps, leadership academies, etcetera.  More information on how your child can be involved in these opportunities will come from the schools as we draw closer to that time.  Thank you for your patience and support.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
