A LETTER FROM YOUR PAC & PTA LEADERSHIP
Posted by J.S. at 10/28/2014By PAC President Demery Matthews and PTA President Lorna SimonHello Fremont Families!
Well into the school year, dedicated parents have been working for you and your children. We hope everyone enjoyed a great kick-off with Fremont’s Welcome Back Picnic and our Kindergarten Dinner – both events hosted together by PTA & PAC! As always, we strongly encourage you to jump in and see how YOU can help!
PAC has and will continue to support the Computer Lab -- we have listened to parents and teachers and are now focused on ensuring our children receive top-level, age-appropriate computer instruction! We are very excited to have hired Ms. Karyn Kemmerer who fills a new full-time position as Computer Lab Instructor.
With Common Core, it is more important than ever that our children learn to use computers proficiently. Students integrate classroom curriculum with the computer lab, creating projects that build skills in both traditional formats and technology.
Ms. Kemmerer is motivated to bring our children up-to-speed, having developed curriculum that integrates math, science, and language arts into students' computer use. The new lab schedule increases computer time for each grade level.
To continue supporting technology, teacher grants, classroom supplies, chorus, P.E., and so many great programs, PAC requests that ALL Parents and Community support our 2014 Annual Campaign happening right now and our other fun events throughout the year (Dine-Out Nights, Live Auction on Jan. 30, and Fiesta & Silent Auction on May 16).On the PTA front, we started the school year by introducing our new families to the Fremont Community with the New Parent Orientation and Kindergarten Orientation. Thanks to all the volunteers who welcomed the new families by giving campus tours and acting as Parent Buddies. PTA also welcomed new and returning staff with a delicious luncheon the Friday before the first day of school.
The first day of school was filled with excitement not only for the students’ new assignments, but also for the parents reuniting with other parents at the Howdy Coffee/PTA Association Meeting. Parents were informed that the Membership Drive began Thursday of that week, and were reminded of the many school programs that the PTA supports. They also were encouraged to sign up at the Volunteer Boards and commit to “Three for Fremont” — at least three hours of volunteer work outside of the classroom for our school. We always need more volunteers, and remember to support our fundraisers!
As of October 15, Fremont PTA has 653 members, and has logged in a total of 2,100 volunteer hours. During the first two months of the new school year, the PTA has coordinated several events. Besides those already mentioned, we had Gift Wrap Sales, Weekly Smoothie Tuesday Sales, Fall Food Drive, Book Fair, Art Docent, Music Docent, Walk to School Week, and as always, coordination of classroom parent volunteers.
Through our fundraising, the PTA has also provided a librarian and books for our school library, and in support of our Bully Prevention Program we have funded an iCare Rep, Striders and the Book & Game Club. PTA also presented the first of three educational assemblies on October 15, Bobby Rodriguez Jazz Adventure from The Music Center.
Although our Membership Drive ended, we still welcome new members (our goal is 100% participation), and we encourage all parents to be even more involved in our wonderful school and their child’s education.

FREMONT GETS JAZZY AT PTA ASSEMBLY
Posted by J.S. at 10/16/2014Fremont students were treated to an amazing jazz concert and lesson in the history of jazz music during Wednesday's PTA-sponsored educational assemblies.Grammy-nominated Bobby Rodriguez, Ph.D., performed with his ensemble of seasoned professional musicians (Ryan Cross, Bass; Andre Delano, Sax; Jack LaCopte, Drums; Billy Mitchell, Piano) who are all deeply committed to expanding the musical experience of children. Their combined professional credits include performance and recording work with such legends as Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Ike & Tina Turner and many more. The performance opened with a rousing riff from "When the Saints Go Marching In," then the students were led through an examination of jazz. Musical samples included blues, Dixieland, swing, be-bop, jazz rock and Latin jazz. The program also provided background and historical information about the origin and development of jazz in New Orleans; the birth of the blues; jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker; the big band era; and introductions to rhythmic patterns and improvisational styles. During the Blues section, Rodriguez shared his story of his humble beginnings as a child in East L.A. who saw a trumpet player on TV and decided that's what he wanted to be. He eventually earned a Masters in Music and finally a Doctorate from UCLA. His story not only encouraged the kids to continue educating themselves, but to never stop following their dreams.
The students heard demonstrations of many instruments, including drums, saxophone, bass, piano, trumpet, electric instruments and Latin percussion. The drummer did a fun rhythm exercise with the kids where he played a beat and they clapped it back. A brief history of Latin jazz was followed by hands-on participation by the kids with percussion instruments. The kids roared with applause when Mrs. Abboud, Mrs. Wooldridge and Miss Tom were brought up during their different assemblies to dance with Rodriguez during the Salsa section. At the end of the 5th/6th Grade Assembly the students kept chanting "We Want More!" until the musicians came out and did an encore.
"It was really an amazing show," says Betsy Wilbur, PTA 1st VP Assemblies. "I am so excited that our students had the chance to hear this caliber of musician play. Bobby and his musicians kept the kids captivated, enthusiastic, and dancing in their seats for the entire performance. I hope that what they heard today will help instill a love of music and an appreciation of the jazz genre.”Click here for a video clip of the performance:
Ask your kids about the assembly! Here are some questions you can ask to get your discussion started (your kids will love that you are interested!):
- What was your favorite instrument played by jazz adventure? What about its shape and sound attracted you?
- What are some of the types of jazz you remember from the performance?
- What does it mean to improvise?
- How did the musicians use their personalities in their playing?
- Describe how jazz could be considered a type of language.
Bobby Rodriguez Jazz Adventure was the first of three educational assemblies being funded this year by the PTA. The purpose of these assemblies is to augment our student curriculum with inspiring, educational, and motivational presentations that give the students an alternative outlet for learning and expose them to things they don’t normally see in the classroom environment. All of the educational assemblies include written teacher preparation materials that contain background information on the artist and specific performance, as well as pre- and post-performance activities for the classroom. The assemblies will cost the PTA a little under $7,000, the budgeted amount for the year. “The money raised through our PTA fundraisers throughout the year is so important to keep these kinds of programs available for our kids,” says Wilbur.
Next will be “A Gaelic Gathering: Irish Music and Dance” on January 14. A rich celebration of Irish culture, this lively show is a feast of Irish tunes and stars internationally award-winning dancers. Traditional instruments accompany rhythmic hard shoe Jigs and Hornpipes, as well as lyrical soft shoe Reels and Slipjig.
Finally, the students will see a condensed production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet” on April 29. The multicultural ensemble Will & Company performs William Shakespeare’s tale of love and loss, set in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, with authentic costumes and dazzling swordplay. On educational assembly days, students in grades K-2 see the performance at 9 a.m., grades 5-6 see the performance at 10 a.m. and grades 3-4 see the performance at 11 a.m.
You can find more information about Rodriguez at bobbyrodriguez.com. -

Posted by J.S. at 9/30/2015By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator
Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month for September: Jennifer Zimmer!
Being a full-time English teacher at Rosemont Middle School and single mom to her two sons is not enough for Jennifer Zimmer. No, she has always found the time to be an exceptional volunteer at Fremont.
Zimmer has served several years as PTA treasurer and also as PTA auditor. Currently she is not only a PAC Board member but also a PAC committee chair for Fiesta Ticket Sales, Teacher Holiday Gifts and the Annual Campaign.
In addition, for the second year in a row, Zimmer serves as Sixth-Grade Committee treasurer, which not only requires her to be involved in every sixth-grade fundraiser (Open House Bake Sale, Pancake Breakfast, Pumpkin Patch, Bootique) but also to keep all committee chairs on budget.
On top of all that, Zimmer still finds the time to be an art docent in her son’s class. And she's always one of the first parents to offer assistance in keeping her boys' Little League teams running smoothly.
Zimmer is the proud mom of sixth-grader Jacob and seventh-grader Jackson.
As one of the people who nominated her for Volunteer of the Month wrote: “Working full time and being a single parent, she always finds time for Fremont! And she does it with a smile!”
Thank you, Jennifer, for everything you do for Fremont!

PTA LINES UP EXCITING EDUCATIONAL ASSEMBLIES
Posted by J.S. at 9/2/2015By Betsy Wilbur, PTA 1st VP of Assemblies
Fremont students will be exposed to music, dance and theatre from around the globe this year as part of the PTA’s Educational Assembly Program.
We are excited to be bringing in some amazing performers this year who are sure to inspire our students. These performances will encourage creative thinking and introduce our students to diverse cultural traditions.
First up will be a high energy cultural performance from Capoeria Brasil Los Angeles on October 12.
Complete with live music, acrobatics, dance, and audience interaction this assembly will be both fun and informative. The CBLA Cultural Program focuses on disseminating the dynamic Afro-Brazilian culture as well as illustrating the importance of fitness, athleticism, discipline and hard work. Youth are drawn to the movements and the music and fascinated by Capoeira's unique and complex history. Because Capoeira involves music and dance-like movements, many see Capoeira as a dance. It is much more. It is a game, a dance, a martial art, a way to get fit and a form of self expression. It is also an art form that illustrates the centuries-old connection between Latin and African cultures.
Capoeira began developing some time in the 17th century. It was created by Africans brought to Brazil as slaves. This forced migration gave rise to a new and powerful identity, and the Afro-Brazilian culture was born. Capoeira is one of the empowering and iconic cultural manifestations that developed out of this new identity. Today, Capoeira is practiced by youth and adults of all ages, all over the world. The program underscores the importance of arts and tradition and their role in history. Most importantly, youth are encouraged to think outside the box and understand the world as a diverse global community.
Next will be music from INCA, The Peruvian Ensemble on January 13.
INCA offers a wonderful and colorful array of music and dances from Peru and the Andean region. The performance features traditional instruments and costumes from the native Incas (Andean style), from the Hispanic communities of the coastal areas (Criollo style) and the African people from the villages south of Lima (Afro-Peruvian style).
Finally, in March the students will be treated to an original Broadway Review called “The History of Musical Theatre in 42 Minutes.” The professional actors of the Musical Theatre Guild will present an educational and entertaining overview of the rich history of the American Musical, exposing our students to the world of live theatre.
Each year the Fremont PTA funds three to four Educational Assemblies to augment our student’s curriculum with inspiring, educational, and motivational presentations that give the students an alternative outlet for learning. The assemblies for the 2015-16 school year were budgeted at $7,000.
The money raised through our Membership Drive and fundraisers throughout the year is so important to keep these kinds of programs available for our kids.
All performances include written teacher preparation materials that contain background information on the artist and specific performance, as well as pre- and post-performance activities for the classroom. On Educational Assembly days students in Grades 5-6 will see the performance at 9 am, grades TK-2 will see the performance at 10 am and grades 3-4 will see the performance at 11 am.

"...Instead of talking on the phone and looking away, pay attention and never leave your soufflé!"
The Fire Picnic, sponsored by the Glendale Fire Department, had fun activities like trying out the firefighters' heavy gear or rolling out the long, unruly fire hoses. The hoses were even turned on the students at two different times! They had a blast!Basketballs, tickets to the group One Direction, and pogo sticks were raffled off by our local firefighters. After lunch of grilled hot dogs and chips, awards were given.Special thanks to Lorna Simon, PTA president and Leah's mom, for submitting the blog post, and to June Bennett, Grace's mom, for the photos. -

TEACHERS, STAFF GET PAMPERED DURING SPA DAY
Posted by J.S. at 4/28/2014By Betsy Wilbur, PTA President and Spa Day Chair
Last Friday during Staff Appreciation Week the PTA converted the teachers' lounge into a spa-like setting, complete with a fountain, herbal tea and peaceful music. The teachers and staff could sign up for two 10-minute appointments to enjoy a relaxing massage (donated by local therapists) or hand treatment. Many of the staff just took a few moments to sit and relax in a soothing environment. Our staff works so hard and the PTA was happy to give them a little treat.
It takes MANY parents pitching in to make the day happen. Thanks so much to all of you!
Ruth Tatom, Diana Keeney, Betsy Wilbur and sixth-graders Dylan Wilbur and Elsa Tatom worked together to transform the room. Stacy Kim, Ruth Tatom, Betsy Wilbur, Hasmik Kadimyan and Diana Keeney generously donated/loaned us the items we needed to create the spa setting. Parents Jim Schmit, Christina Martin, Dorrie Nuttall, Elizabeth Migliaccio and Liz Schentina are all credentialed teachers who volunteered their time covering the classrooms all day. Christina Martin also coordinated all the subs! Parent Annette Postelwait helped give the staff paraffin wax hand treatments.
Finally, Paige Clarke, Betsy Wilbur and Maggi Ayranjian, along with Fremont students Liam Wilbur, Jack Clarke and Kailyn Clarke, made sure it all got cleaned up and returned the lounge to normal.
PLEASE PATRONIZE THESE PROFESSIONAL THERAPISTS WHO DONATED THEIR TIME AND TALENTS FOR OUR SPA DAY (and tell them Fremont sent you!):

JOHN BARBA IS VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Posted by J.S. at 2/25/2014Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month for February: John Barba!Barba stepped forward as a volunteer at the beginning of the year to teach a free computer coding class after school. In order to teach the class he applied for and received a special credential and then modified and developed a curriculum based on Scratch, a programming language designed by MIT for children ages 8 and up.In addition to agreeing to teach four of the six-week sessions of the class to third- through sixth-graders, Barba also is serving as advisor to Fremont's Coding Club. The Coding Club is for students who have gone through his class and want to continue to improve their coding skills in an independent study environment with a curriculum he has suggested.Barba has a computer science and engineering degree from MIT and has worked as a software engineer for more than 25 years. We are incredibly lucky to have someone so knowledgeable on the subject teach our children such an important skill!
Barba has two children at Fremont and one at Rosemont. When not writing code or working with technology, he enjoys coaching youth soccer and playing chess with his children.
Thank you, John, for everything you are doing for Fremont! To select Fremont’s Volunteer of the Month, we reach out to Fremont Teachers and PAC/PTA Chairpersons to gather their nominations. Those nominated may include a dedicated and reliable classroom helper or may be a face you recognize who provides support to Fremont’s school-wide events and programs. Once the nominations are gathered, a selection is made based on each nominee’s outstanding contributions. -
