    • SCIENCE ASSEMBLY WOWS STUDENTS

      Posted by J.S. at 10/28/2016

Students were treated to their first PTA-sponsored educational assembly last week, a Halloween-themed science presentation called "Boo!"

Presenter Rich Blagden, a credentialed science teacher, used dry ice, test tubes, bubbles, vegetable oil and other items to teach students about various scientific principles.

Science5 In one experiment he demonstrated a process called sublimation, in which dry ice -- technically not ice, but rather solid carbon dioxide -- converts from a solid to a gas, bypassing the liquid stage, and producing a whole lot of spooky looking "smoke." He explained that solid carbon dioxide is what looks like snow on Mars, but is not snow at all.

In another demonstration that seemed magical, he showed how that same carbon dioxide gas can be "poured" onto a lit candle to extinguish it. The carbon dioxide starves the fire of oxygen. Blagden explained to the students that this same process is how fire extinguishers work -- and why they should be pointed at the base of the fire instead of the shooting flames in order to be most effective.

Blagden, who is a member of the National Science Teachers Association and California Science Teachers Association, also explained the science behind a theoretical invisibility cloak, known to students from Harry Potter, by showing how shining light into a Pyrex bowl full of vegetable oil can make light refract and seem to make objects disappear (pictured above).

Additional demonstrations included creating screaming straws and other instruments, and showing how soap bubbles float in carbon dioxide gas.

During the three shows at Fremont, many of the students in kindergarten through sixth-grade were brought on stage to participate in the science demonstrations. They took turns being sublimation scientists, bubble scientists, sound-make scientists and more.

The PTA is proud to be offering two more educational assemblies this school year:

January 18, "Street Beat" -- an energetic and interactive percussion-based performing arts group. Inspired by the theatrical success “Stomp,” performers in “Boom Tap” use household items such as trash cans, buckets and old wheels as percussion instruments. The show aims to teach, uplift and inspire students of all backgrounds to incorporate music playing into their daily lives. Street Beat is part of Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s Arts for All program. The learning plan aligns with California’s Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards.

March 8, "Poetry Jam" -- a high-energy interactive performance that reveals the fun and enjoyment that can be found in poetry and language. Drawing on a diverse array of poets from Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky to A.A. Milne and Carl Sandburg, and including such classics as “Casey at the Bat,” the show serves as a great overview and introduction to poetry. Extensive audience participation, humor, pacing, pratfalls and props turn this energetic performance into a true spoken-word “jam.” From host David Prather’s comical entrance on a razor scooter to his donning a sandwich board, jumping rope, hurling TVs, and juggling boxes he pulls out all the stops to make ‘em laugh while they learn! Prather, the host of the L.A. Philharmonic’s annual “Open House” at the Hollywood Bowl, has toured schools with the LA Music Center for 15 years. He is a graduate of Princeton University and American Conservatory Theatre.

    • LEAVING THEIR MARK ON THE NEW BUILDING

      Posted by J.S. at 10/26/2016

      By Dr. Christin Molano, Principal

On Friday, October 14th, the students and staff at Fremont had the opportunity to leave their mark permanently on the new 2-story building being constructed.

Currently the steel frame is being erected so one of the beams was moved to a safe area for students to view and teachers to sign.

Each class created a message for the future, teachers wrote it on the beam and then it was moved into its permanent place at the end of the day. If you look at the lower area of the building near Downing Avenue you will see it.

Students and staff had a wonderful time and were very excited about this project!

She has been room parent for all eight years -- three of them in two classrooms. Laura On top of that she has served as PTA Historian, a position on the PTA Executive Board, since 2012 and has committed to another year. In that role, Englund-Krusee takes pictures throughout the year at all major Fremont events and puts together a slide show that students will see during school and families will enjoy at a special evening show.

In addition, she has been supporting the yearbook team as photographer since 2012.

Next year Englund-Krusee will also co-chair the sixth grade T-Shirt committee and once again serve as K-Kids Liaison, as she already did when her older daughter was in sixth grade.

As one of the people who nominated her said: "Laura is an incredibly hard-working and friendly volunteer who always steps up to help out and give our kids the best."

She is the proud mom of seventh-grader Khalia and fifth-grader Maia.

Thank you, Laura, for all the many things you do for Fremont!

    • DIANE JONES IS VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

      Posted by J.S. at 4/29/2016

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our new Volunteer of the Month for April: Diane Jones!

Jones is one of our most dedicated volunteers who consistently works to make Fremont a fabulous and friendly place.

FP She has served as PTA Secretary this school year and is committed to serve a second term next year. She also has volunteered on the PTA Nominating Committee.

In addition to these duties, Jones has been busy co-chairing Fremont’s always-popular Book Fair, which took place twice this school year and is a major fundraiser.

This month she helped make the Staff Appreciation Week a success by coordinating a wonderful breakfast for the Fremont staff.

On top of all that, Jones is room parent for Mrs. Wolf's class and frequently helps out in both her kids’ classrooms – either stuffing Thursday folders or working centers.

As one of the people who nominated her remarked: “She lives here! Her Book Fair was extraordinary and her help in both kinder and second-grade classrooms is over the top. Thank you!”

In addition to volunteering her time to Fremont activities, Jones also helped start up a new Girl Scout Daisy troop this year for her daughter and many other kindergarten girls! She serves as the troop's co-leader.

She is the proud mom of second-grader Eli and kindergartener Sylvie.

Thank you, Diane, for all of the many, many things that you do for Fremont!

Congratulations to fifth-grader Jacob Choe who took seventh place in the "I Love My Neighborhood" Poster Contest.

Fremont students first-grader Zoe Gibson and second-grader Lindsey Yoo also were nominated for the grand prize.

The contest was created in 1994 by Glendale Clean & Beautiful "to educate students and their families about civic responsibility and neighborhood pride," according to the group's website. "Standards aligned lessons and activities are provided in a teacher's guide where students learn about the sources of litter and pollution prevention. Over the years, the contests has addressed themes relating to graffiti and litter prevention, increasing neighborhood pride, and encouraging community recycling."

    • SPA DAY GIVES OUR HARD-WORKING STAFF A BREAK

      Posted by J.S. at 4/22/2016

By Betsy Wilbur, Spa Day Chair

On the Friday of Staff Appreciation Week the PTA converted the teacher's lounge into a spa-like setting, complete with a fountain, herbal tea and peaceful music. The teachers and staff could sign up for two 10-minute appointments to enjoy a relaxing massage (donated by local therapists) or paraffin wax hand treatment. Many of the staff just took a few moments to sit and relax in a soothing environment. Our staff works so hard and the PTA was happy to give them a little treat. To quote Mrs. Wolf, “It’s my favorite day of the year!”

It takes MANY, MANY parents pitching in to make the day happen. Thanks so much to all of you!

Lorna Simon, Josette Jaramillo, Heather Gore and Paige Clarke helped transform the room. Irene Potikyan and Jenny Fickas donated spa water items and magazines. Mike Anderson coordinated the volunteer credentialed substitutes who were in the classrooms while the teachers enjoyed their spa appointments (and also was a sub the entire day himself). Parents Christina Martin and Elizabeth Migliaccio were also volunteer subs in the classrooms. Parents Olga Aguirre, Nancy Park, Paige Clark, Lisa Enriquez (who doesn’t even have a child at Fremont anymore but came to help anyway because we needed it), Lisa Schellenbach, Janet Greninger, Lorna Simon, Amanda Jane, Armena Andranian, Carolyn Sion and Annette Postelwait helped give the staff paraffin wax hand treatments.

Finally, Leslie Lesh, Laura Englund-Krusee, Lisa Schellenbach and Jenny Fickas helped make sure it all got cleaned up and returned the teacher’s lounge to normal.

PLEASE PATRONIZE THESE PROFESSIONAL THERAPISTS WHO DONATED THEIR TIME AND TALENTS FOR OUR SPA DAY (and tell them Fremont sent you!)

IDEA: A massage certificate would make a GREAT end-of-year gift for your teachers!

    • KAROLIINA NAUHA IS VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

      Posted by J.S. at 3/16/2016 6:00:00 AM

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our new Volunteer of the Month for March: Karoliina Nauha!

Nauha Nauha has proven to be an invaluable asset to our school!

She has served as PTA's Vice President of Fundraising for two years. In this role she made big changes to fundraising at Fremont by introducing new fundraisers such as Mixed Bag Designs, Yum Yum Yogurt and Valentine's See's Candy Sales.

In doing so, she helped bring in thousands of dollars for our school!

In addition to taking the lead role of PTA VP/Fundraising, she also serves as room parent in her daughter Tea’s first-grade class and volunteers her time to help in her kids’ classrooms. She also is the proud mom of third-grader Miro.

As one of her fellow volunteers says: “Karoliina has been a great asset to Fremont, and we are very grateful for all her hard work and kindness!”

Outside of school Nauha helps out at her church, is very involved in bringing awareness to celiac disease and “... even through her job (as a dietitian) she shows that she is dedicated to helping others,” says one of her co-volunteers.

Nauha's contributions and smiling face will be missed by us all as she, husband Petri and the kids will be leaving us soon to start a new and exciting chapter of their lives in Louisville, Kentucky!

Karoliina, thank you for all you have done for our school. We wish you and your family all the best for this adventure!

To select Fremont’s Volunteer of the Month, we reach out to Fremont Teachers and PAC/PTA Chairpersons to gather their nominations. Those nominated may include a dedicated and reliable classroom helper or may be a face you recognize who provides support to Fremont’s school-wide events and programs. Once the nominations are gathered, a selection is made based on each nominee’s outstanding contributions.

    • ASSEMBLY COVERS HISTORY OF MUSICAL THEATRE

      Posted by J.S. at 3/4/2016 9:00:00 AM

By Betsy Wilbur, PTA 1st Vice President of Assemblies

Our Fremont TK-6 students were exposed to the world of live theatre when they were treated to “The History of Musical Theatre in 42 Minutes and 28 Seconds” during PTA-sponsored Educational Assemblies on Monday and Tuesday. The fun show was created and is performed by members of Musical Theatre Guild, a non-profit membership company of theatrical professionals who produce and perform a variety of musical theatre works for the entertainment, enrichment and education of Southern California audiences.

Theatre The musical review included selected songs encompassing the richness and diversity of a truly original American art form. A cast of four actor/singers and a pianist used selected costume pieces and props to trace the colorful history and development of musical theatre. Starting from the earliest shows, the company presented songs from the groundbreaking productions of "Showboat" (1927) by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein, and "Oklahoma" (1943) by Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers. Moving forward in time, the performers continued to explore this unique art form by examining the music and songs from recent Broadway musicals, such as "Ragtime" and "The Lion King." The song list also included favorites from "Annie Get Your Gun," "West Side Story," "Hello, Dolly!," "Hair," "Grease," "A Chorus Line" and "The Phantom of the Opera."

Students learned about the elements in a musical: book (story or script), lyrics (words to songs), the score (the music) and dance. They learned how the lyrics express the thoughts and emotions of characters, contributing to the mood and moving the action forward. They also learned how the score reinforces the emotion and can serve as a transition between parts of the show. Finally, they were shown how dance can also help establish mood, comedy or dramatic moments.

Students were selected in each assembly to participate on stage in “Tomorrow” from “Annie,” and the actress playing Eliza from “My Fair Lady” danced with boys from the audience as she sang “I Could Have Danced All Night.” All the students clapped along to “Let the Sunshine In” from “Hair” and almost everyone recognized “Circle of Life” from “The Lion King.” Afterwards the kids got to ask the actors questions.

Ask your kids about the assembly! Here are some questions you can ask to get your discussion started (your kids will love that you are interested!):

      • Had you ever heard any of the songs in "The History of Musical Theatre in 42 Minutes and 28 Seconds"? Which ones? Where did you hear them?
      • What was your favorite song in "The History of Musical Theatre in 42 Minutes and 28 Seconds"? Why?
      • What are the three main elements in a musical? (book, song, dance)
      • If you could play any of the characters you were introduced to in the performance, which one would you choose? Why?
      • The revue featured musicals from different time periods. Which musical took place in the 1950s? The 1960s?
      • What similarities did you notice between the scene from "Romeo and Juliet" and the scene from "West Side Story"? How were they different? Describe.

"The History of Musical Theatre" was the last of three Educational Assemblies being funded this year by the PTA. The purpose of these assemblies is to augment our student curriculum with inspiring, educational and motivational presentations that give the students an alternative outlet for learning and expose them to things they don’t normally see in the classroom environment – especially the arts. All Educational Assemblies include written teacher preparation materials that contain background information on the artist and specific performance, as well as pre- and post-performance activities for the classroom. The assemblies will cost the PTA a little under $7,000, the budgeted amount for the year. The money raised through our PTA fundraisers throughout the year is so important to keep these kinds of programs available for our kids.

Congratulations to our new Volunteer of the Month for December/January: Tanya Einhaus!

Since moving to California from Austria four years ago, Einhaus has been helping out at Fremont in a variety of ways.

Einhaus For the last two years, she has been serving as PTA Volunteer Coordinator, making sure that many of the volunteer jobs at Fremont are filled so that our school activities and functions run smoothly.

Another part of this role is recognizing the outstanding volunteer contributions at our school by naming each Volunteer of the Month during the year.

As one of the people who nominated her for Volunteer of the Month noted: "Tanya does so much for Fremont. Now, it's her turn to take the honors!"

In other contributions, Einhaus has put in countless hours with the PTA Scholastic Book Fairs, offering her creativity and time in setting up the popular fund-raising event.

    • ASSEMBLY FEATURES MUSIC FROM PERU

      Posted by J.S. at 1/19/2016 11:30:00 AM

By Betsy Wilbur, PTA 1st Vice President of Assemblies

Our Fremont K-6 students were treated to the traditional and ancient music of Peru during last week's PTA-sponsored Educational Assemblies. INCA –The Peruvian Ensemble played rare and authentic instruments, carrying the students back to the lost empire of the Incas.

The performance included an introduction to the music of Peru, featuring indigenous Inca, Spanish and African influences. The program began with a song from Puno that featured the Quena, an Andean version of the flute. This was followed by a lively, traditional dance from Cusco, which is performed during a harvest celebration and features a native Inca stye. Sikuriada, a song from the Lake Titicaca region, highlighted the Campona, traditional bamboo “pan pipes.”

The students heard two musical solos – one played on the Charango, a unique and tiny guitar, and the other played on the Cajon, a special wooden box.

Other dances included one with a Hispanic influence from the northern coast of Peru and Pio-Pio, of mestizo heritage from the southern Andes.

Additional musical pieces featured wooden flutes and chac-chacs, shakers made of goat and sheep hooves. The kids were fascinated by an instrument made from the jaw bone of a donkey!

Students participated in an Afro-Peruvian competitive dance, and were also called up to play some traditional Peruvian rhythm instruments. The kids loved it when Ms. Molano and some of their teachers, including Miss Morgan and Ms. Wooldridge, were brought up to also learn the dancing.

Ask your kids about the assembly! Here are some questions you can ask to get your discussion started (your kids will love that you are interested!):

      • What are the three main cultures in Peru and what has each contributed to Peruvian music?
      • What words would you use to describe the music of Peru? What feelings did it bring to you?
      • What most impressed you about the performance? What about these things stood out?
      • What are the different musical categories of instruments that were played (percussion, wind, strings)?
      • What were the different movements that were performed in the dances? Can you demonstrate any of them?

INCA – The Peruvian Ensemble was the second of three Educational Assemblies being funded this year by the PTA. The purpose of these assemblies is to augment our student curriculum with inspiring, educational and motivational presentations that give the students an alternative outlet for learning and expose them to things they don’t normally see in the classroom environment.

At the end of February our students will be treated to an original Broadway Review called “The History of Musical Theatre in 42 Minutes.” The professional actors of the Musical Theatre Guild will present an educational and entertaining overview of the rich history of the American Musical, exposing our students to the world of live theatre.

On Educational Assembly days students in grades K-2 see the performance at 9 a.m., grades 5-6 see the performance at 10 a.m. and grades 3-4 see the performance at 11 a.m.
