    • JENNA HARKINS IS VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

      Posted by J.S. at 12/2/2015

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month for November: Jenna Harkins.

Harkins Family Harkins has proven to be an invaluable asset to our school and makes a difference at Fremont every day!

She was nominated by several of her fellow volunteers for her many and varied contributions, which include different PAC positions such as PAC Board Member and PAC Cash-Back Programs Coordinator. PAC is Fremont’s parent-run foundation that raises money in order to fund important educational programs and equipment that the school district can’t finance. Harkins is also part of the PAC Annual Campaign Committee and the PAC Fiesta Committee – both programs are among the biggest fundraisers and events for Fremont.

She also took on the lead role on numerous PTA positions. As PTA Room Parent Coordinator, Harkins finds room parents for all teachers at Fremont and supports them throughout the year. Her job as PTA Beautification Chair is to keep Fremont green and blooming, and as PTA Library Volunteer Coordinator she makes sure that our librarian always has helpers to shelve the books.

Harkins is also serving as PTA Labels for Education Chair. And on top of all that she helped organize this year’s Mixed Bag Design fundraiser and input all student orders.

In addition to taking the lead role in these Fremont programs, she still finds the time to be room parent in both her sons’ classes, which she has been for the past three years.

Harkins has helped in both her boys’ classrooms since day one. "She is always helping everywhere she can," says one of the people who nominated her. "She is funny, honest, and always up for the challenge. I have rarely heard her say 'no' when help is needed, maybe never.”

She is the proud mom of second-grader Connor and fourth-grader Braden.

Thank you, Jenna, for all you do for our school!

To select Fremont’s Volunteer of the Month, we reach out to Fremont Teachers and PAC/PTA Chairpersons to gather their nominations. Those nominated may include a dedicated and reliable classroom helper or may be a face you recognize who provides support to Fremont’s school-wide events and programs. Once the nominations are gathered, a selection is made based on each nominee’s outstanding contributions.

    • VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH: RANDA AND NASSIF SHAMMAA

      Posted by J.S. at 11/4/2015

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our Volunteers of the Month for October: Randa and Nassif Shammaa.

“Super Couple” -- that’s how several people who nominated Randa and Nassif describe them!

Volunteers Ever since their sixth-grade daughter, Nour, started first grade at Fremont, this couple has been helping out at our school in many ways.

Nassif has done the tax returns for the Fremont PTA for the past four years, at no charge. This saves the PTA quite a lot of money that instead is being used to fund some of the many PTA programs and events.

As one of the people who nominated Nassif said: “It is so nice when parents use their talents to help the school in unique ways.”

Randa’s list of volunteer work seems endless. Not only has she been serving as co-chair for the Fremont Art Docent program, but she also chaired the Welcome Back Staff Luncheon, which is held the week before school starts. This year she also co-chaired the sixth grade Halloween Bootique, and she also serves as chair for the upcoming sixth grade Camp Highland trip.

On top of all that Randa, who is a Registered Nurse, also coordinated the TB test clinic for our Fremont parents.

Last but not least, Randa has been room parent and art docent for both her kids’ classrooms throughout the past years.

Randa is a dedicated volunteer who is always ready to lend a helping hand.

After school Randa volunteers her time as co-leader for her daughter Nour’s Girl Scout troop.

Randa and Nassif are the proud parents of sixth-grader Nour and fourth-grader Elias.

Thank you, Randa and Nassif, for all you do for Fremont!

    • VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH IS JENNIFER ZIMMER

      Posted by J.S. at 9/30/2015

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month for September: Jennifer Zimmer!

Being a full-time English teacher at Rosemont Middle School and single mom to her two sons is not enough for Jennifer Zimmer. No, she has always found the time to be an exceptional volunteer at Fremont.

Zimmer Zimmer has served several years as PTA treasurer and also as PTA auditor. Currently she is not only a PAC Board member but also a PAC committee chair for Fiesta Ticket Sales, Teacher Holiday Gifts and the Annual Campaign.

In addition, for the second year in a row, Zimmer serves as Sixth-Grade Committee treasurer, which not only requires her to be involved in every sixth-grade fundraiser (Open House Bake Sale, Pancake Breakfast, Pumpkin Patch, Bootique) but also to keep all committee chairs on budget.

On top of all that, Zimmer still finds the time to be an art docent in her son’s class. And she's always one of the first parents to offer assistance in keeping her boys' Little League teams running smoothly.

Zimmer is the proud mom of sixth-grader Jacob and seventh-grader Jackson.

As one of the people who nominated her for Volunteer of the Month wrote: “Working full time and being a single parent, she always finds time for Fremont! And she does it with a smile!”

Thank you, Jennifer, for everything you do for Fremont!

    • PTA LINES UP EXCITING EDUCATIONAL ASSEMBLIES

      Posted by J.S. at 9/2/2015

By Betsy Wilbur, PTA 1st VP of Assemblies

Fremont students will be exposed to music, dance and theatre from around the globe this year as part of the PTA’s Educational Assembly Program.

We are excited to be bringing in some amazing performers this year who are sure to inspire our students. These performances will encourage creative thinking and introduce our students to diverse cultural traditions.

First up will be a high energy cultural performance from Capoeria Brasil Los Angeles on October 12.

PTA Complete with live music, acrobatics, dance, and audience interaction this assembly will be both fun and informative. The CBLA Cultural Program focuses on disseminating the dynamic Afro-Brazilian culture as well as illustrating the importance of fitness, athleticism, discipline and hard work. Youth are drawn to the movements and the music and fascinated by Capoeira's unique and complex history. Because Capoeira involves music and dance-like movements, many see Capoeira as a dance. It is much more. It is a game, a dance, a martial art, a way to get fit and a form of self expression. It is also an art form that illustrates the centuries-old connection between Latin and African cultures.

Capoeira began developing some time in the 17th century. It was created by Africans brought to Brazil as slaves. This forced migration gave rise to a new and powerful identity, and the Afro-Brazilian culture was born. Capoeira is one of the empowering and iconic cultural manifestations that developed out of this new identity. Today, Capoeira is practiced by youth and adults of all ages, all over the world. The program underscores the importance of arts and tradition and their role in history. Most importantly, youth are encouraged to think outside the box and understand the world as a diverse global community.

Next will be music from INCA, The Peruvian Ensemble on January 13.

INCA offers a wonderful and colorful array of music and dances from Peru and the Andean region. The performance features traditional instruments and costumes from the native Incas (Andean style), from the Hispanic communities of the coastal areas (Criollo style) and the African people from the villages south of Lima (Afro-Peruvian style).

Finally, in March the students will be treated to an original Broadway Review called “The History of Musical Theatre in 42 Minutes.” The professional actors of the Musical Theatre Guild will present an educational and entertaining overview of the rich history of the American Musical, exposing our students to the world of live theatre.

Each year the Fremont PTA funds three to four Educational Assemblies to augment our student’s curriculum with inspiring, educational, and motivational presentations that give the students an alternative outlet for learning. The assemblies for the 2015-16 school year were budgeted at $7,000.

The money raised through our Membership Drive and fundraisers throughout the year is so important to keep these kinds of programs available for our kids.

All performances include written teacher preparation materials that contain background information on the artist and specific performance, as well as pre- and post-performance activities for the classroom. On Educational Assembly days students in Grades 5-6 will see the performance at 9 am, grades TK-2 will see the performance at 10 am and grades 3-4 will see the performance at 11 am.

To join or donate to the Fremont PTA, visit the Fremont Webstore.

    • MIGLIACCIOS ARE VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

      Posted by J.S. at 6/3/2015

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our new Volunteers of the Month for May: Elizabeth and Shawn Migliaccio!

The couple has made a big difference at Fremont throughout the past several years that their two children have attended.

Migliaccios Elizabeth not only has served as room parent in her daughter’s second-grade class this year but also as art and music docent. Elizabeth is a regular classroom helper and signed up to be chorus performance helper, too. On top of that, she is the leader of a Girl Scout Brownie troop.

But the list doesn’t end there. Elizabeth also has been involved in the Fremont Family Fiesta, dedicating her time as snack bar and volunteer coordinator. In the past she volunteered not only for the Sixth-Grade Committee but she also served as Co-Chair of Book Fair, one of PTA's biggest fundraisers.

Shawn has been actively involved in PAC. He joined the foundation two years ago as a Board Member and has led the effort to develop a 3-Year Financial Plan for PAC that has now been adopted as part of the annual budget and planning process. He has served as PAC Treasurer for the current school year and signed up for the upcoming school year as well.

Furthermore, Shawn has been Fiesta Co-Chair, overseeing activities, set up and break down. Fiesta is PAC’s biggest annual event with food, fun and carnival games for the whole family. Behind the scenes this event requests lots and lots of volunteer work, hours and hours of planning, organizing and coordinating. For the past two years Shawn has been one of the leading people who made this event a success. Last year he brought in huge inflatable rides to the Fiesta in order to bring in more people from the community.

To use the words of one of the people who nominated them: “This couple has contributed their time and efforts to make Fremont a better school!"

Elizabeth and Shawn are proud parents of seventh-grader Andrew and second-grader Aniela.

Thank you Elizabeth and Shawn for all you do!

    • PTA BRINGS SHAKESPEARE TO FREMONT STUDENTS

      Posted by J.S. at 5/9/2015

By Betsy Wilbur, PTA 1st VP of Assemblies

Our Fremont K-6 students were treated to a condensed 45-minute theatrical production of “Romeo and Juliet” for the recent PTA-sponsored Educational Assembly. The multicultural ensemble Will & Company performed William Shakespeare’s tale of love and loss, set in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, with authentic costumes, lots of physical humor, and dazzling swordplay.

Under the artistic direction of Colin Cox, the Will & Company Theatre Troop presented major scenes from the play interspersed with narration and background information, with three of the five actors playing multiple roles.

Shakespeare For the K-2 assembly the actors improvised some of their lines, paraphrasing the language in more modern words so the kids could better follow along. They used the original language for the older grade assemblies and also incorporated several Fremont students in the show. At the 5th/6th assembly, Sydney Postelwait got to play Juliet’s maid and dance with Romeo at the ball. John Hebert and Nathan Kilgore were Montagues (Romeo’s family), while Lucy Zobayan and Kailyn Clarke were members of the Capulet (Juliet’s) Clan. The four 5th graders had lines in a fight scene and got to perform a choreographed sword fight they had learned earlier that morning. For the 3rd/4th performance, Samantha Bouzikian, Damian Valdez, Taleen Krikorian and Alex Minasyan played the Montagues and Capulets.

This PTA assembly was so exciting because we're exposing our kids to the work of the most influential writer of all time. Many of the best novels, plays, poetry and films in the English language are heavily influenced by Shakespeare’s stories, characters, language and themes. Kids at this age don’t know that Shakespeare is supposed to be hard. I hope the performance got them excited about seeing and studying more Shakespeare in the future! The kids were really engaged. It was so fun to see their reactions to everything – especially the kissing parts. The K-2 kids really expressed their horror when that happened.

Ask your kids about the assembly! Here are some questions you can ask to get your discussion started (your kids will love that you are interested!):

      • If you were to describe the story of Romeo and Juliet in a few sentences, what would you say?
      • Which characters did you identify with most? Why?
      • How do Juliet's view of love and her parents' view of love differ?
      • Do you think the power of love could have brought the Capulets and Montagues together without bloodshed? How might the tragedy have been avoided?
      • Did the performance make you more interested in the plays written by William Shakespeare?

"Romeo and Juliet" was the last of three Educational Assemblies being funded this year by the PTA. The purpose of these assemblies is to augment our student curriculum with inspiring, educational and motivational presentations that give the students an alternative outlet for learning and expose them to things they don’t normally see in the classroom environment.

All Educational Assemblies include written teacher preparation materials that contain background information on the artist and specific performance, as well as pre- and post-performance activities for the classroom. For the "Romeo and Juliet" performance the teachers were encouraged to discuss some of the most famous lines from the play that are often quoted in contemporary literature, newspaper articles, speeches, television and film. They were also encouraged to use the performance of "Romeo and Juliet" as a springboard to discuss conflict and/or crisis situations in today's world. Are there aspects of human nature that seem timeless?

The assemblies cost the PTA a little under $7,000, the budgeted amount for the year. The money raised through our PTA fundraisers throughout the year is so important to keep these kinds of programs available for our kids.

On Educational Assembly days students in grades K-2 see the performance at 9 a.m., grades 5-6 see the performance at 10 a.m., and grades 3-4 see the performance at 11 a.m.

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our new Volunteer of the Month for April: Carolyn Sion!

Sion Sion is a volunteering veteran at Fremont and an active member of the PTA. Since 2009 she has been a Walk-a-Thon chair. The annual Walk-a-Thon is one of Fremont’s biggest fundraisers, which at the same time promotes health and exercise. Another sportive program that Sion has been volunteering for is Striders! Running Club, which is a non-competitive run/walk club for Fremont students. It is an extension of the “I Care” campaign.

For the past four years she also has served as an art docent in her kids’ classrooms.

In addition, Sion has been the leader of a Fremont Girl Scout troop since 2008. She started the troop when “her” girls were in kindergarten.

Last but not least, Sion, who loves to bake, regularly provides baked goods for the numerous Fremont events.

But not only does she work with many of the Fremont kids while volunteering at school, she also volunteers as a coach for the AYSO Fall and All Star programs and for YMCA basketball and soccer. Additionally, she is on the AYSO Board of Directors, processing medical release forms.

Sion is proud mom of fifth-grader Reese and third-grader Eddie.

As one of her fellow Fremont volunteers aptly put it: “It’s time for her to get a high five!"

Thank you, Carolyn, for all you do!

    • SPA DAY GIVES STAFF A RELAXING BREAK

      Posted by J.S. at 4/10/2015
By Betsy Wilbur, PTA Spa Day Chair

On the Friday of Staff Appreciation Week the PTA converted the Teachers Lounge into a spa-like setting, complete with a fountain, herbal tea and peaceful music. The teachers and staff could sign up for two 10-minute appointments to enjoy a relaxing massage (donated by local therapists) or hand treatment. Many of the staff just took a few moments to sit and relax in a soothing environment. Our staff works so hard and the PTA was happy to give them a little treat.

It takes MANY, MANY parents pitching in to make the day happen. Thanks so much to all of you!

Jenna Harkins, Lisa Enriquez, Meline Shahouni and Christine Shahinian helped me transform the room.

Jennifer Ward, Paige Clarke, Jenna Harkins, Karin Koukeyan and Heather Dinger generously donated/loaned us the items we needed to create the spa setting.

Irene Potikyan coordinated the volunteer credentialed subs who were in the classroom while the teachers enjoyed their spa appointment. Parents Jim Schmit, Christina Martin, Dorrie Nuttall, Rita Zobayan and Leona Darmanian were volunteer substitutes in the classrooms throughout day.

Parents Lisa Enriquez, Nancy Park, Lorna Simon, Brenda Smith, Paige Clarke, Blessie Bulaon and Stephanie Charles helped give the staff paraffin wax hand treatments.

Finally, Paige Clarke, Lorna Simon and Ara Zarifian, along with some of their helpful children, helped me make sure it all got cleaned up and returned the Teachers Lounge to normal.

PLEASE PATRONIZE THESE PROFESSIONAL THERAPISTS WHO DONATED THEIR TIME AND TALENTS FOR OUR SPA DAY (and tell them Fremont sent you!)

Congratulations to our new Volunteer of the Month for March: Tamar Kousherian!

Kousherians Kousherian has played a big part in making a difference at Fremont! She has been volunteering at our school since her oldest son Alec – now a second-grader – started in kindergarten.

Since 2013 Kousherian has served as co-chair for one of our students’ favorite events and fundraisers - the Book Fair, which is usually held twice a year. It gives students easy access to a wide assortment of books, and inspires them to read more.

In addition, she organized this year’s annual Founders Day Gala, which celebrates the founding of the PTA in 1897. This is one of her many duties as a member of the PTA Executive Board, serving as the 2nd Vice President for Hospitality.

Kousherian also has been busy as a room parent in both her sons’ kindergarten classes. On top of all that she helped new parents at our school as a Kindergarten Orientation campus guide and New Parent Buddy. As Kindergarten Orientation chair, she also coordinated the Kindergarten Family Dinner two years ago.

She is the proud mom of second-grader Alec, kindergartener Haig and future Fremont student Vana, age 1.

It is amazing how much you do for our school, Tamar. Thank you!

By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our new Volunteer of the Month for February: Armena Mirzayan!

Mirzayan has made a big difference at Fremont as chair of the Art Docent Program for the past two years and member of the PTA Executive Board.

Arment Fremont’s Art Docent Program brings specially designed art lessons to each classroom several times a year. Administered and taught by parent volunteers and funded by the PTA, each lesson covers either a specific artist, artistic movement or technique and includes a short lecture followed by a hands-on project.

Mirzayan is very passionate and extremely dedicated to the Art Docent Program. It is essential for her that every child at Fremont be able to explore art, and she goes out of her way to help teachers, students and parent volunteers in order to make this happen.

According to Mrs. Osment: “She is an expert at last-minute changes in scheduling, joyful in her delivery and inspirational to those who lack confidence in the world of art! ... We love her!”

In addition to taking on this lead role, Mirzayan is also eager to give support to her fellow volunteers. Whether it’s helping out at the Book Fair or supporting her Art Docent co-chairs Randa Shammaa and Yvette Caudillo, Mirzayan is always willing to help!

She is the proud mom of tenth-grader Zareh, sixth-grader Andre and fourth-grader Raymond.

Thank you for all you do for our school, Armena!

      Posted by J.S. at 2/15/2015 9:00:00 AM
Mascot Fremont has a brand new mascot -- but it needs a name!

There are a couple ideas floating around for our mascot's moniker:

Ms. Molano suggested Johnny C. (get it ... for John C. Fremont).

But Mr. Lalo thinks Meatball is the right fit.

Do you have an even better idea? Students can submit their ideas to the office by February 20. The winner will be announced soon.

By the way, it has yet to be determined if our mascot is a boy or a girl.

Special thanks to the PTA for sponsoring our Fabulous Friendly Fremont mascot.

Here are a couple more photos of our mascot in action at the recent pajama-themed Spirit Assembly, where special sixth-grade security was called in due to the wild crowds.

    • VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: DORA NGUYEN

      Posted by J.S. at 2/2/2015 8:00:00 PM
By Tanya Einhaus, PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Congratulations to our new Volunteer of the Month for January: Dora Nguyen!

Nguyen Nguyen has made a difference at Fremont ever since her daughter, Kylee - now a second-grader - started in kindergarten.

Nguyen has been a room parent/co-room parent every year and is doing a great job at coordinating class parties, teacher gifts and classroom helpers.

She also volunteers three times a week for Striders, Fremont’s non-competitive run/walk club for our students, which is part of the “I Care” campaign.

This year Nguyen is also co-chair for the See’s Candy fundraiser.

In addition, she is always eager to give support to her fellow volunteers, whether it’s helping at the Book Fair or with Gift Wrap sales.

As one of her fellow Fremont volunteers says: "Everyone has seen her. Everyone has walked by and seen her working on some project. She is everywhere - joyful, helpful and willing to be of service."

Thank you, Dora, for all you do for Fremont!

    • ASSEMBLY TEACHES STUDENTS ABOUT GAELIC CULTURE

      Posted by J.S. at 1/16/2015

By Betsy Wilbur, PTA 1st VP of Assemblies

Our Fremont K-6 students were treated to a wonderful assembly celebrating the exuberance of Irish culture during three PTA-sponsored Educational Assemblies this week.

IrishDance1 A Gaelic Gathering-Irish Music and Dance is a company of internationally award-winning dancers and musicians performing a feast of Irish tunes and dances originally created by Maire Clerkin.

She was accompanied by Musical Director, fiddle player/dancer Kira Ott and champion stepdancer Jennifer Keogh. Frank Simpson played an array of flutes and whistles; Patrick D’Arcy played ancient instruments including uilleann pipes (elbow bagpipes) and bodhran (drum). Renowned vocalist Moira Smiley sang haunting songs and played accordian. Together they guided our students on a cultural journey through Ireland’s rich heritage.

The performance included traditional instruments accompanying rhythmic hard shoe Jigs and Hornpipes, as well as lyrical soft shoe Reels and Slipjigs. The artists explained the social context of Irish people gathering to socialize and relax, by singing, playing and dancing. They also traced the emigration history of the Irish people to the United States and highlighted their impact on American culture.

Students all participated in singing and rhythm exercises, then were taught to identify specific foot combinations from the dances. Student volunteers were invited up to learn a Ceili dance to music.

"The assembly was fabulous," says Lorna Simon, PTA President. "The kids were fascinated!"

Ask your kids about the assembly! Here are some questions you can ask to get your discussion started (your kids will love that you are interested!):

      • What was your favorite instrument played and why (sound? appearance? name?)?

      • How do different types of shoes make some dances different than others?

      • How do Irish dancers hold their bodies, arms and legs and how does this compare to other forms of dance you know?

      • Culturally, what did people in Ireland do to enjoy themselves before electricity?

A Gaelic Gathering – Irish Music and Dance was the second of three Educational Assemblies being funded this year by the PTA. The purpose of these assemblies is to augment our student curriculum with inspiring, educational, and motivational presentations that give the students an alternative outlet for learning and expose them to things they don’t normally see in the classroom environment.

All Educational Assemblies include written teacher preparation materials that contain background information on the artist and specific performance, as well as pre- and post-performance activities for the classroom. The assemblies will cost the PTA a little under $7,000, the budgeted amount for the year. The money raised through our PTA fundraisers throughout the year is so important to keep these kinds of programs available for our kids.

Next, the students will see a condensed production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”on April 29. The multicultural ensemble Will & Company performs William Shakespeare’s tale of love and loss, set in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, with authentic costumes and dazzling swordplay.

On Educational Assembly days students in grades 5-6 see the performance at 9 a.m., grades K-2 see the performance at 10 a.m. and grades 3-4 see the performance at 11 a.m.
