    Detention

    Teachers are allowed to give students after school detention according to the GUSD Board Policy 5144.  You will be contacted by either the classroom teacher or the school office to explain why your child is being held after school and for how long.  Students, grades 4-6, may be kept after school for no more than 45 minutes of detention.  Students, grades 1-3, may be held after school for no more than 20 minutes of detention.  Students may be asked to do “community service” and or “makeup” work during this time.  Students will be supervised by a classroom teacher at all times during detention and will be dismissed from the school office.

     

    Alternative To Suspension: Saturday School; In-House (Campus Beautification Program)

    Depending on the severity of the incident, students may be inhouse suspended (i.e. report to school but not the classroom). In addition, students, grades 4-6, may be referred to Saturday School as a consequence for breaking a school or District rule. This is an alternative to a formal suspension and is given at the discretion of the school administrator.  Students are expected to attend the Saturday that they are assigned.  Failure to attend Saturday School will result in a formal suspension the next school day.

     

    Suspension And Expulsion Policy

    Sometimes students choose to do something that warrants either an in-school or formal suspension for one or more days.  Students may be suspended according to the California Education Code 48900 for any of the following reasons:

     (1) Caused, attempted to cause, or threatened to cause physical injury to another person.

     (b) Possessed, sold, or otherwise furnished any firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous objects.

     (c) Unlawfully possessed, used, sold, or otherwise furnished, or been under the influence of, any controlled substance.

     (d) Unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any controlled substance.

     (e) Committed or attempted to commit robbery or extortion.

     (f) Caused or attempted to cause damage to school property or private property.

     (g) Stole or attempted to steal school property or private property.

     (h) Possessed or used tobacco, or any products containing tobacco or nicotine products,   including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, miniature cigars, clove cigarettes, smokeless tobacco,     

           snuff, chew packets, and betel. 

     (i) Committed an obscene act or engaged in habitual profanity or vulgarity.

     (j) Unlawfully possessed or unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any drug paraphernalia.

     (k) Disrupted school activities or otherwise willfully defied the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators, school officials, or other school personnel engaged in the performance   

          of their duties.

     (l) Knowingly received stolen school property or private property.

     

    Possession of any real or toy firearm (gun), knife, explosive or other dangerous object will result in immediate suspension and possible expulsion.

    The Board of Education prohibits sexual harassment of any student by any employee, student, or another person in or from GUSD.  Any student who engages in the sexual harassment of anyone in or from the District will be subject to discipline up to and including suspension and expulsion.  Students and staff are required to immediately report incidents or complaints to the principal or other school staff member

    A pupil may be suspended or expelled for acts that are enumerated in this section and related to school activity or attendance that occur at any time, including, but not limited to, any of the following:

      (1) While on school grounds. (2) While going to or coming from school. (3) During the lunch period whether on or off the campus. (4) During, or while going to or coming from, a school sponsored activity.

    We expect all children to use good manners, be thoughtful and respectful towards one another and all adults at school.  If children are having problems with other students they are expected to try to peacefully resolve the issue themselves and if that is not possible, ask an adult at school for help.
