Teacher spotlight: Getting to know Mr. Brown
Mr. John Brown is A.W. Beattie's Building Construction instructor. We asked a few questions to learn more about him, and we will feature another staff member next week.
What was your first job?
Dishwasher at Eat'n Park
Why did you become a Building Construction teacher?
I went to Forbes Road CTC when I was in high school. As I got more involved in career and technical education, I was hooked. I knew not long after starting that teaching a CTE program would be something I would be interested in pursuing one day. I worked for a few years in the field before an assistant position opened, then I eventually became the senior teacher in the program. I have worked very hard and overcame a lot to get to where I am, and I am very proud of that.
What do you enjoy most about the Building Construction field?
There are so many different avenues of the construction field, so I like the variety. One day you could be drywalling, the next day building a deck and the next day doing demo. It’s always changing. You can make a good living as well, as long as you don’t mind putting in a good day's work.
What do you feel is the key to teaching?
Connecting with the students. We treat our shop as if it were a job site. We expect a lot from our students, but in return they except a lot from us in the form of education. It’s a mutual respect that must be made in order for a class to run smoothly.
What can you be found doing when you’re not teaching?
I like to travel with my family. Most of our travels are to amusement parks. I am an active member of the American Coaster Enthusiasts and have been all over North America riding rides. Everything from the tallest and fastest rides in the world, to the great views from the top of a Ferris wheel. I have ridden almost 200 different coasters so far.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?
To the dismay of my wife, I am a reality TV junkie. Survivor, The Amazing Race and Big Brother are among my favorites.
What activities are at the top of your bucket list?
Traveling to Australia or Dubai.
What can you reveal that people might not expect about you?
I have a tough exterior, something you need teaching at the high school level, but I am a total momma's boy at heart. I would do anything for her.
