Staff spotlight: Getting to know Mrs. Zylinski
Mrs. Kim Zylinski is A.W. Beattie's School Counselor and the Beattie Assistance Team Coordinator. We asked a few questions to learn more about her, and we will feature another staff member next week.
What was your first job?
Babysitter.
Why did you want to work in education?
I knew I wanted work in education in some capacity. I debated between social work and school counseling and liked Duquesne’s program. The stars just aligned.
What do you enjoy most about the education field?
I enjoy speaking to the students. I love hearing about their interests and hobbies as well as helping them plan for the future. Also, it’s fun to see all the projects going on in the building. Our students do a lot of amazing things here on a regular basis!
What do you feel is the key to education?
If you are excited for the topic, the students will be excited, too. I saw this with the Volunteer Initiative Program (VIP). We started with two students going to Grace Manor, and the past few years we have had close to 50 student volunteers. Excitement and passion are contagious.
What can you be found doing when you’re not teaching?
Hanging out with my family. My oldest daughter is participating in softball for the first time and my younger daughter is going to be starting dance classes.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?
Friends.
What activities are at the top of your bucket list?
Visit Australia, see all 50 states and retire from education as a successful novelist.
What can you reveal that people might not expect about you?
I enjoy listening to Linkin Park. Their Hybrid Theory and A Thousand Suns albums are amazing.
