A.W. Beattie, Deer Lakes student earns recognition in art portfolio contest

Congratulations to Haley Studeny, a Deer Lakes senior who attends A.W. Beattie’s Advertising Design program.

Haley is the first A.W. Beattie student in eight years to place in a Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition and the only Deer Lakes students to be honored in the competition this school year. She earned an Honorable Mention for her work in the Scholastics Art and Writing Portfolio category. 

“Haley is one of the hardest working students I know,” Advertising Design instructor Mrs. Brown said. “She is always on top of everything and looks for extra activities to do like the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.”

Each participant in the Scholastics Art and Writing Portfolio category had to come up with a theme, and Haley chose to focus on recreating artwork she did when she was younger to show her improvement.

“I had to start by sketching out each of the six drawings,” Haley said. “I did this very thoroughly and made sure that no little details were missed. I chose pictures that I took on my own of different family members and friends along with a few other things to make it more personal. I then had the put them in adobe photoshop to add certain elements to it that went along with my theme.”

Haley’s name may come up again in the near future for SkillsUSA, which she competes in through the Career Center.

“I enjoy Beattie and Advertising Design, because it gives me a lot of opportunities to do things, I've never done,” she said. “I think it has helped me gaining more experience with stuff in the design industry that I wouldn't have known if I didn't go to Beattie.”

After graduating from Deer Lakes, Haley will attend CCAC and transfer credits to a university to become a primary schoolteacher or an art teacher.

“Mr. Dumbeck and Mrs. Brown are both very encouraging and supportive teachers that will help someone out with anything,” Haley said. “I hope students will look up to me someday the way that I look up to them.”
