A.W. Beattie announces new Surgical Sciences program

A.W. Beattie Career Center aims to launch its newest program as soon as the 2020-2021 school year.

High school students seeking a career in health care may already attend one of six medical-related programs – Dental Careers, Emergency Response Technology, Health and Nursing Sciences, Pharmacy, Sports Medicine and Veterinary Sciences.

You can add Surgical Sciences – Operating Room Technologies to that list.

A.W. Beattie has been in the process of working with local healthcare providers for more than two years to create the Surgical Sciences – Operating Room Technology program.

“Guidance from our local industry leaders is invaluable to the educational experiences students will have in Surg Tech,” A.W. Beattie Executive Director Eric Heasley said. “We couldn’t be happier to have local professionals be a part of this process to provide new opportunities to high school students from our nine sending schools. If you are a professional in the field and interested in assisting us, please reach out at info@beattietech.com.”

The Surgical Sciences program will help bridge the gap between the increase in demand for surgical technology related skills – the field will grow by 9 percent in the next 10 years, according to the Bureau of Labor – and the national shortage of professionals in the surgical technology field.

“Students who attend the program will get access to advanced technology that makes simulation learning as close to real clinical situations as it can be,” Heasley said. “You will perform simulated surgical procedures in real-life scenarios. This exposure prepares students to be college and career ready.”

The program will prepare students, under the supervision of an instructor who has years of experience in surgical operating rooms, to have the skills to work and advance within the surgical technology field.

Surgical Sciences courses of study will include equipment sterilization and handling, operating room supply management, wound procedures, surgical computer and robot operation, maintenance of equipment and scrubbing along with related tasks and procedures.
