His 14-year-old best friend, Perry Bogacz, had an idea: “Come work at my dad’s pizza shop.” Perry’s father, Nick Bogacz, is the founder and owner of Caliente Pizza & Draft House, which began in Bloomfield in 2012 and now has five locations around Pittsburgh.

So Alex started out topping pizzas and working on cleanup. He advanced to become a shift leader and this summer was named the kitchen manager at Caliente’s Hampton location. Perry, meanwhile, made a quick rise of his own, becoming a shift manager at Caliente’s Monroeville restaurant in February. Both are in charge of several dozen employees, many of them twice the teens’ age.
