Honors Hospitality and Tourism Marketing
This course is designed for students interested in an advanced study of the hospitality and tourism industry. Emphasis is placed on the following principles as they apply to the industry: business management, career development options, client relations, ethics, events and restaurant management, facilities management, legal issues and contracts, promotion, operations and sponsorships. Skills in communications, human relations, mathematics, psychology, and technical writing are reinforced in this honors level computer lab course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include marketing simulations, projects, teamwork, DECA leadership activities, meetings, conferences, and competitions provide many opportunities for application of instructional competencies.
In addition, students will utilize and prove mastery of Microsoft Office Applications and Google Workspace Applications. Students will also gain knowledge of graphic design, utilizing industry standard software and cloud-based technology in order to produce an honor-level portfolio of work.

Curriculum Content
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an honors curriculum that includes depth in rigor, accelerated pacing, complexity, challenges, and creativity beyond the standard level course. Curriculum content extensions and additional topic objectives selected will provide critical thinking and problem-solving skills to meet the needs of advanced learners. The standards and objectives relate to Career and Technical Education, English Language Arts, Math and 21st Century skills.
This course is aligned to post-secondary opportunities and/or industry recognized standards/ credentials.

Standards and Objectives
Unit 1/ Unit 3 Honors Project EXTENSION:
Students will deepen their understanding of the multi-faceted segments of the hospitality and tourism industry by creating a new interactive and informational website for an economically depressed city or town who has recently undergone significant revitalization. The website will include options for multicultural and multi-generational experiences to appeal to a wide demographic.
Unit 2 Honors Project EXTENSION:
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of needed infrastructure, budget allocation, tax revenue appropriation and sales forecasts in a sales presentation for bringing a large festival or event to their town. Students will submit a strategic plan with a focus on costs and profits, promotional materials and visual representations and an oral sales report.
Unit 4 Honors Project EXTENSION:
Students will demonstrate their knowledge and put into practice excellent customer service skills. They will establish themselves as an “expert” in the travel industry and develop promotional materials in order to secure customers and clients. Students will act as travel agents for a faculty member and plan travel options that meet and satisfy their budget needs. Students will be expected to meet with their clients and gain new business from referrals, score well on customer feedback forms and successfully follow up after the sale.
Semester Long Honors Portfolio Project is covered in a semester-long intensive research project using DECA prompts and guidelines. Students may complete the portfolio as a team (no more than three people) or as an individual.
Instructional Materials and Methods
This course will be taught using text resources, supplementary materials prepared by MBA Research, computer programs, and graduated task and project rubrics that are appropriate for advanced learners. Instructional strategies will incorporate CTE, ELA. Math and 21st Century Skills. Also included are teacher as facilitator, student led learning, and project-based learning instructional strategies. These strategies help prepare the advanced learner for career, college and community readiness.

Hospitality and Tourism should implement instructional materials such as MS Office, Adobe, Internet, LAP’s and DECA materials that are accepted as industry standards.
Assessment
Students are assessed using an assortment of methods in this course. All formal and informal assessments are aligned with the honors level curriculum and instructional best practices which include pre-assessments, formative and summative assessments. Project based assessments will also be used to generate ongoing student data to meet the needs of the advanced learner. Students will be provided opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessments to adjust and improve learning.
Assessment practices are based on honors level blueprint and differentiated instruction is provided based on assessment data feedback throughout the entire course. For example, rubrics and scoring guides are created based on real world and industry standards for this course.
Individual and collaborative assessments may include, but are not limited to: rubrics, portfolios, objective tests, performance tests, self evaluation and reflection.
