On April 13, the South Colonie Board of Education announced the appointment of William Roemer as the next Supervisor of Physical Education, Athletics, and Intramurals for South Colonie Central School District, effective July 1.
Roemer will continue his career with South Colonie after serving as associate principal at Colonie Central High School since 2014. In his role, he supported the executive principal, supervising and supporting operations for the technology, social studies, foreign language, and counseling departments. In addition, Roemer also served as the district’s music supervisor for K-12.
“Knowing Bill and knowing his history with the district and passion for both students and athletics, I know he’s going to do a fantastic job,” said Dr. David Perry Superintendent of Schools.
Roemer has served on multiple committees at both the building and district level including Safe Schools (SAVE), Co-Curricular, Evaluation and Health & Wellness Committees. Roemer also served as a liaison to the Physical Education Department, serves as a member on the district’s Athletics Hall of Fame Committee, as well as being the Unified Sports Youth Activities Committee Advisor.
“We are thrilled to name Mr. Roemer as the Supervisor of Physical Education, Athletics, and Intramurals for the South Colonie Central School District,” said Rose Gigliello, board of education president. “In addition to his enthusiasm for supporting students as associate principal, he has been very active with our athletic community and it’s evident that his passion for coaching students and supporting faculty will serve him well in his new role.”
Prior to South Colonie, Roemer spent six years teaching Physical Education and coaching at Averill Park H.S., including five years as the Head Varsity Football Coach. He has coached both boys and girls in a variety of sports, from youth coaching to the head varsity level. In 2009, he joined the South Colonie teaching staff and served in various capacities to support the district’s athletic vision most notable as the Varsity Head Football Coach (2012-2014), developer of the Colonie Junior Raiders Football program, and founder of the South Colonie Girls Youth Lacrosse program (2009-2013).
Roemer holds a Bachelor of Science, Physical Education from Springfield College, a Master of Science, Education Administration and Policy Studies from the University of Albany, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership and Administration from The College of St. Rose.
“I am extremely excited for this opportunity and the future for Athletics at South Colonie. It will take a collaborative effort from both our school and our community to achieve athletic excellence. I am committed to excellence in all areas of our athletics program, on and off of the playing fields. I would like to thank the board of education and the district administration for this great opportunity,” said Roemer.
In conjunction with his service to the school district, Roemer has held memberships in various professional organizations including The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), US Lacrosse, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), The New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AAHPERD), and National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).
Roemer is replacing Joseph Guardino who is slated to retire on July 1.
