Proctors created and produced HSMTA; its primary sponsor is the Times Union. The theater awards are presented in collaboration with the Broadway League. Winners of the HSMTA awards for best actor and best actress will travel to New York City over the summer to participate in the Jimmy Awards, a national competition for high school performers that is sponsored by the Broadway League.

A panel of judges attended and ranked musicals presented at 17 high schools work!

The winners will be announced during a ceremony and performance modeled after the Tony Awards, scheduled for May 14 at 7pm at Proctors. Production numbers from the shows nominated for best musical and performances by finalists for best actor and best actress will be presented during the awards show, and opening and closing numbers will feature students selected from each participating school.
