Members of Rocky Point High School’s Class of 2024 began the next stage of their lives at the district’s annual commencement ceremony on June 26. As the students proudly walked onto the school’s football field, the sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance” greeted them. The ceremony began with a welcome from Principal James Moeller, who thanked administrators, Board of Education members, educators, parents and family members for the collective guidance and support along the students’ path to success.

Student Renee Ortiz sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” accompanied by the High School band conducted by Amy Schecher, which was followed by Exhortation Speaker Parker Matzen who shared the history and lessons that he learned along with his peers.

Principal Moeller then shared his pride with the Class of 2024. He applauded their achievements in school and in the community. He tied Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” with the steps the students took to get to this point – even shared memories of serving as the Middle School principal while they were there. He spoke of his pride in the students and highlighted the inaugural Unified Basketball team as a true showing of Rocky Point community and pride. Mr. Moeller also spotlighted other athletic teams, accomplishments in academics, arts and more.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Scott O’Brien followed and shared the symbolism of Rocky Point’s mascot, the eagle, noting they are not just symbols of strength and freedom but also share valuable lessons about perseverance, growing stronger and more confident until they one day fly effortlessly across the sky. He stated that just like Rocky Point’s esteemed mascot, the students have embodied resilience, strength and grace throughout their educational journey in Rocky Point.

Valedictorian Isabella Rooney and salutatorian Sofia Haviland each addressed their fellow classmates, sharing words of remembrance from their time spent in Rocky Point, as well as encouragement for their peers’ new journey ahead.

Board of Education President Jessica Ward then officially presented the candidates for graduation to all those in attendance.

Rocky Point High School valedictorian Isabella Rooney was among the top students honored at The Suffolk County School Superintendents Association 30th annual Valedictorians Luncheon held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. The SCSSA tradition honored the accomplishments of the county’s highest-achieving graduates from the Class of 2024 and was attended by school district superintendents, high school principals, valedictorians and their parents.

After being welcomed by SCSSA President-Elect Dr. Harold Dean, SCSSA President Dr. Timothy Hearney noted that leadership begins with one’s mindset. He advised the graduates to reflect on what matters and to find their way to find purpose and meaning in what they choose to do in life. Dr. Hearney also said, “Leadership is about finding joy,” and to “work hard to find joy in what you do.”

Guest speaker Matthew Cohen, president and chief executive officer of the Long Island Association, noted that the valedictorians were “people who are going to think out of the box to find solutions.”

Isabella was called to the stage, accompanied by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Scott O’Brien and Rocky Point High School Principal James Moeller to receive a certificate of recognition, the book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seus and a journal from SCOPE.

During his closing remarks, Dr. Dean congratulated the valedictorians on their outstanding accomplishments and wished them continued success in all their future endeavors.
