A celebratory Rocky Point Grade 8 Moving-Up Ceremony took place on June 25. The students assembled before proud parents, teachers and district administrators to signal the start of the ceremony.
Principal Dawn Meyers hosted the event, with “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by the eighth grade chorus with accompaniment by the band and orchestra members. Student Savannah Bullock expertly signed both the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem. The eighth grade speaker was Jayna Cohn, who shared her reflections on the middle school years and how she is looking forward to high school with her peers.
In addition to every graduate receiving their diploma, numerous students were honored for outstanding achievements, receiving departmental awards for English, math, social studies, science, foreign language, student government, physical education, art and music. Other awards included the New York State Attorney General’s Triple “C” Award, the New York State Comptroller’s Award, the Presidential Outstanding Academic Excellence Award, the PRIDE (Participation, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence) Award and the Suffolk County Public Service Award. These students were recognized and presented with awards of recognition and certificates acknowledging their outstanding character traits and community service efforts. Each student was then called to the podium to receive their official moving-up day certificate.
