Even before construction on the new state-of-the-art preschool building begins, Ottumwa will begin to expand opportunities for preschool families.
Starting this fall, parents of four-year-olds will have the opportunity to attend preschool all day. Ottumwa will offer the traditional instructional component with certified teachers, and then offer wraparound services. Wraparound services will allow students to attend from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate working parents. There will be no fee for this program.
"We are extremely excited about the opportunity to expand our preschool programming as well as the amount of students we serve," said Superintendent Nicole Kooiker. "We believe that getting students into school at an early age helps students develop the skills necessary to be successful throughout life."
A waiver from the Ottumwa Fire Department will allow the district to use second floor classrooms at the former Agassiz Elementary building as needed to serve students attending the wraparound program. Previously, this was not an option due to the International Fire Code that prohibits preschool students from being served on a floor without a direct exit.
The wraparound program will be DHS licensed and provide enrichment opportunities for our students. Students will have the opportunity to continue to learn and grow throughout the day. "I am so happy for our preschool students, their families, and our preschool program," said Kelly Young, a veteran preschool teacher.
