Why is there web filtering?
Web filtering is in place to ensure the safety of the student. No web-filtering product is foolproof or as impactful as a conversation between a student and his or her parent/guardian about Internet Safety and the expectations of behavior while online. We encourage you to talk with your child about responsible internet use and to reinforce the importance of staying focused and safe online.
Who is providing the Chromebook web filtering?
Web filtering will be automatically installed by the Lightspeed Filter Extension, upon successful student log-in. Lightspeed provides the student population web filtering based upon age-appropriate groups. (elementary, middle school, and high school)
Will Chromebooks have web filtering during the school day?
The regular student web filtering policy will be in place for Chromebooks during school hours and will have the same web filtering policy as all student desktop computers throughout the school district.
Will Chromebooks have web filtering at the end of the school day and on the weekend?
The after-school web filtering policy will take place each day beginning at 3:30 p.m. and will end the following day at 7:00 a.m. It will also be in effect on the weekend.
What will be restricted via Chromebook web filtering?
In accordance with Board Policy 7540.03, the following categories will be restricted during the previously mentioned timeframe: Adult Content, Alcohol, Gambling, Illegal Drugs, Pornography, Nudity, Violence, and Weapons.
Can a Chromebook access Netflix or stream music?
Yes, Chromebooks can stream music, access Netflix, and other streaming sites but only after 3:30 p.m. on school days. These types of sites will be available until 7:00 am the following morning.
What about Social Media? (Facebook and X)
Access to Facebook, X and other social media sites will be limited to only high school students, only after 3:30 p.m. on school days. These types of sites will be available until 7:00 a.m. the following morning. High school students will have access to these sites over the weekend.
What if filtering impacts a student's ability to learn?
Student safety will always be the number one concern. The Technology Department will work with teachers and building administrators to make sure students are not impacted negatively by filters when researching educational materials.
