Sponsored by Madisonville Community College Lions Club, Glema Mahr Center for the Arts, and Hopkins County Schools Gifted and Talented. 

In serving Hopkins County’s gifted & talented students identified in the areas of visual and performing arts, creativity, and leadership – the Office for Gifted Services continues to offer the opportunity for Talent Shows and Art Exhibits in each of the schools.

These two events are inclusive for ALL 4th and 5th-grade students in each elementary school through open auditions. Attempts are made to utilize some GT-identified students as a “core” group for organizing and leading these events. 

The middle/high schools in Hopkins County participate in these two events in their schools and also provide middle/high school performers as guest performers for the elementary talent shows – if desired.

We are excited to continue with our community sponsors– The Madisonville Community College Lions Club. They sponsor the district-level talent shows for elementary, middle, and high schools each spring along with support from the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. To be eligible to participate in these district events, the process begins with each school’s local talent show. The district talent events will be held in April each year– necessitating all local school events be completed before Spring Break.

The Art Exhibit is similar to a Science/Math Fair with criteria and judging occurring for each entered piece. The school’s art teacher or fine arts teacher may act as a resource in organizing this (or arrangements are made for independent judges – if needed).

The Talent Show focuses on the performing arts and follows criteria established previously at the middle/high school levels. There are open auditions for participation. Prepared information is sent home by the school's GT coordinator (along with a letter/permission for student participation).

The time frame for these two arts offerings would be from now until Spring Break. Each school will request a specific time that may suit them best. The Art Exhibit will require only one date for display/judging. The Talent Show will necessitate at least (3) three separate dates – for auditions, rehearsal, and for the show. These events require out-of-class preparation on the part of the students participating. As mentioned above, local school finalists (1st and 2nd place from the elementary schools and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place from the middle and high schools) will be invited to their specific District Talent Show Event featuring talent from each participating school.

The current literature and research in gifted education reinforces providing students identified in the visual & performing arts with opportunities to create, display, and/or perform their talents and gifts. Along with this group of identified students, these two events allow unidentified students the opportunity to audition and potentially be identified through their elected participation, as well.

And, while these two events are offered based on gifted educational philosophy, they are also occasions to draw interest and involvement from students, schools, and the community.
