Maturation and Sexual Health Education

  • In Glendale Unified schools, instruction related to students’ maturation and sexual health education is taught in grades 5, 7 and 9. Parents may view the materials for these courses prior to instruction and have an opportunity to opt their child out of this curriculum.

Grade 5 – Instruction focuses on body changes that occur during puberty. Boys and girls are separated into two different rooms and shown a 16-20-minute video, typically by the school nurse. Some schools provide a video link for parents to show at home in lieu of watching the video at school.

Grade 7 and 9 – The California Healthy Youth Act, established in 2016, requires school districts to provide comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education at least once in middle school and once in high school. In GUSD, sexual health and HIV prevention instruction is provided in 7th grade science (spring) and 9th grade health classes.
