Mr. Pruitt, Instructor

These composition courses provide the rigor of college preparation and cover proper English usage, composition of logical, coherent essays and critical analysis of canonical and contemporary literature. Students will continue the development of their academic vocabulary, critical reading and writing ability, as well as their understanding of literary and rhetorical devices. These courses will challenge students to engage texts critically, write creatively and analytically, and formulate interpretations based on their prior knowledge and understanding of literary devices. All three courses will survey American, British and World literature, covering writings from the founding of the nations through the modern period, and discussing the philosophical, social and economic forces that influenced the writings of the period. These classes are designed to cultivate an understanding of the elements of effective writing and critical reading. The American Literature course will be standards-based with a focus on preparing for the Smarter Balanced Assessments (TBA), while the Modern Literature course will integrate elements of a College Composition course, and the Advanced Placement class will focus on preparing students for the May AP exam.
