PSAT/NMSQT

For Sophomores and Juniors*

Look for notices announcing in-school registration for the PSAT/NMSQT approximately 2-3 weeks before test date.

*Only Juniors may qualify for the National Merit Scholarship when taking the PSAT.

SAT

  • The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I) is required by many colleges as a means of determining a student's eligibility for admission.

  • The SAT is generally taken during the spring of junior year and can be retaken during the fall of senior year.

  • The test is offered several times each year: October, November, December, January, April, May, and June.

  • EHHS is a testing site for the SAT.

  • Students can register, take practice tests, and get more information at www.collegeboard.com.

  • SAT Subject Tests (SAT II) are offered in specific subject areas. Some colleges require SAT Subject Tests in addition to the regular SAT. Make sure to check the requirements for schools you are interested in.

PSAT/NMSQT

  • The PSAT/NMSQT is a practice test for the SAT and a qualifier for students to become National Merit Scholars.

  • The PSAT/NMSQT is taken during sophomore and/or junior year.

  • Only Juniors can qualify for the National Merit Scholarship based on PSAT/NMSQT results.

  • The test is offered ONCE each year, in the month of October.

  • EHHS is a testing site for the PSAT. Currently the PSAT is paid for through a grant so there is no cost to students. All Sophomores and Juniors are given the PSAT.

  • Practice booklets are available in the Guidance Office.

SBAC

  • The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is committed to ensuring that all students leave high school prepared for postsecondary success in college and careers.

  • In the 2014 - 2015 school year, the Smarter Balanced summative assessments aligned to Common Core State Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics will be administered to students.

  • The SBAC assessment is computer-based.

  • SBAC is taken in April of junior year.

ACT

  • The American College Test (ACT) is required by some colleges (especially those in the midwest) in place of the SAT.

  • The ACT is offered in October, December, February, April, and June.

  • EHHS is a testing site for the ACT!

  • Go to www.actstudent.org for information on test dates, locations, and deadlines; for practice questions; and to register for the test.

  • *** Students must take the writing portion of the ACT at least once! Be sure to check off "ACT Plus Writing" the first time you sign up for the ACT.***

CAPT

  • Every student in the state of Connecticut is required to pass the CAPT (Connecticut Academic Performance Test) in order to graduate from high school.

  • The CAPT assesses and reports on student performance in Science.

  • The CAPT exam is administered at EHHS to all 10th grade students in March.

  • Students who do not pass the CAPT exam in 10th grade are required to retake it in 11th grade.

  • Students who do not pass the CAPT exam in 11th grade are then required to take a CAPT Science class. These classes will be scheduled as needed and are not negotiable.

AP Exams

  • Advanced Placement (AP) exams are offered to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who complete AP level courses.

  • The Advanced Placement Program allows high school students to take college level courses and to earn college credit or placement while still in high school.

  • AP Exams are offered in May of each year .

  • AP Courses currently offered at EHHS are: English Literature & Composition, Calculus AB, Statistics, Chemistry, Biology, US History, European History, US Government & Politics, and Psychology.

** Attention: Students Needing Testing Accommodations **

Please contact the testing company several months before the anticipated test date to apply for accommodations.

    • Colleges, Universities, and the NCAA Clearinghouse MUST have OFFICIAL test scores sent directly to them from the testing service!

    • An unofficial copy of your SAT or ACT scores sent from your high school is NOT acceptable at most schools.

    • To have your scores sent: when registering for the SAT or ACT, be sure to complete the section "College and Scholarship Reports", by filling in the appropriate code for each college you are thinking about applying to, and for the NCAA Clearinghouse if you are thinking about playing sports at the college level.

    • Your registration fee includes having 4 score reports sent to colleges. If you wish to have more than 4 sent, or request to have scores sent after you take the test, a fee will be charged for each report.
