Collinsville schools will be in session on August 21, 2017 — the day a solar eclipse will take place in our community.
“Our dismissal times do not place our students in danger. We have obtained certified safety glasses for all of our students and are training our staff s
o they are prepared to help students safely learn about and experience this historical event,” said CUSD 10 Superintendent Robert Green.
Dr. Green also pointed out that students will be properly supervised while viewing the eclipse at school — something that might not happen if students are at home that day.
“This is a real-life learning experience. Our goal is to keep kids safe and give them an opportunity to be part of this rare phenomenon. Teachers will have lesson plans and tools to help our students understand what is happening that day.”
However, Dr. Green added, “We are committed to what is best for our students. The school board continues to monitor the situation. If circumstances warrant a change in plans, we will notify Unit 10 families as soon as possible.”
Parents will have the opportunity to “opt out” of eclipse viewing through a form that will be shared with families. Students who elect to miss school to view the eclipse with family will be marked absent, but not considered truant on that day.
