Collinsville High School has learned that seniors Masen Kane and Aidan Latham were named Commended Scholars in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program.
Commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who took the fall 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
About 34,000 students nationwide are being recognized as Commended National Merit Scholars. “These students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for National Merit Scholarship Corporation. “We hope this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
Masen Kane is the son of Jennifer and Johnny Kane of Glen Carbon, IL. Masen is a member of the CHS Math Team, Science Olympiad, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, WYSE (World Youth Science and Engineering), Scholar Bowl and Spanish Scholar Bowl teams. He hopes to study computer science at MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford or UC Berkley next year.
Aidan Latham is the son of Lloyd Latham of Maryville, IL and Sherry Pesick of St. Louis, MO. Aidan is a member of the CHS Math team, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, WYSE (World Youth Science and Engineering) and is a National Honor Society pledge. He plans to study math, science and computer science and is considering several universities including Washington University in St. Louis.
