September 16, 2021 – Third graders from Collinsville CUSD 10 elementary schools were invited to attend 2021 3rd Grade STEM Day at Collinsville High School hosted by the CHS STEM Club and the district’s vertical team of science educators.
To adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols, masks were required, displays/activities were spaced apart – including outdoors, stations were cleaned between visits, hand sanitizer was provided and individual classes did not mix with other groups as they moved throughout the CHS Auditorium and Auxiliary Gym. Schools were divided into morning and afternoon sessions and classes spent no more than 12 minutes together at each station before rotating to the next.
CHS Science Department Chair and STEM Club sponsor Pat Szpila said 38 volunteers from the CHS STEM Club ran the experiments at each of the stations and assisted the third grade classes as they moved from place to place. Representatives from Willoughby Farm, the Army Corps of Engineers and McKendree University also staffed stations. Szpila said everyone worked together to make it a safe and fun learning experience for the third graders.
