March 2022 – Three-hundred fifty students in grades PreK-5 from the Collinsville community participated in the 2021-22 Americanism Contest sponsored by local VFW Post 5691. This year’s coloring, poster and essay contest theme was “Honoring Old Glory and Those Who Fought for Her.”
“I would like to thank the schools that offered their students an opportunity to enter our patriotic contest to raise awareness about Americanism. Thank you to the schools, principals and teachers who presented the opportunity to enter the contest,” said Tara Skipper, member of the Kahokian Memorial Post 5691 Auxiliary and 2021-22 chairman of Americanism.
Schools that submitted entries were: Caseyville Elementary, Maryville Elementary, Renfro Elementary, Twin Echo Elementary, Webster Elementary, Dorris Intermediate School and Good Shepherd Lutheran School.
PreK and kindergarten students colored a designated firecracker coloring page; grades 1, 2 and 3 created posters; grades 4 and 5 wrote essays. First place winners in each category advanced to district competition.
“To the students I say a heartfelt thank you for taking the time to participate in this contest to raise awareness of our flag and patriotism,” said Skipper. “Another thank you to the judges who reviewed the entries.”
Bobby’s Frozen Custard, Dairy Freeze and Dairy Haven donated coupons so each participant could receive a free ice cream treat.
Contest entries are currently on display at the VFW building.
