April 12, 2023 – Superintendent Dr. Skertich released the following message to families today regarding a “swatting” hoax phone call that was received by the Collinsville Police Department.
Kahok Families,
Earlier this morning our district was notified the Collinsville Police Department received a “swatting” phone call regarding Collinsville High School. A swatting phone call is defined as “a false report of an ongoing emergency or threat of violence intended to prompt an immediate tactical law enforcement response.”
After interaction with the caller, CPD determined the threat to be non-credible and a hoax. Following conversations between law enforcement and school officials, additional officers were sent to CHS out of an abundance of caution, but no further response was necessary.
We have learned through the Illinois Statewide Terrorism & Intelligence Center that similar calls are occurring throughout the metro east and across the State of Illinois in an attempt to falsely report emergencies, disrupt law enforcement and gain media coverage. Illinois STIC has assured schools there is no information concerning credible threats related to safety. However, law enforcement and security officials have been encouraged to remain vigilant and report all suspicious behavior.
Swatting is taken seriously by law enforcement. Perpetrators can face federal, state and local charges.
Collinsville CUSD 10 is fortunate to have open lines of communication with first responders throughout our district. Please communicate suspicions and concerns to them, or to our principals and staff. We encourage you to call 911 if there is an imminent danger; or share non-emergency information with local police by contacting the dispatch numbers for each community.
Non-Emergency Contact Information:
Collinsville Police: (618) 344-2131
Maryville Police: (618) 344-8899
Fairmont City Police: (618) 274-4504

Madison County Sheriff’s Department: (618) 692-6087

The safety of our students, staff and community will always be a major focus. The times in which we live continue to present new frustrations and challenges. Educators, families, first responders and community members play major roles in helping children feel safe and nurtured. We will continue to work together to support their physical, social and emotional well-being.
Sincerely,
Mark B. Skertich Ed.D.
Superintendent
