Maryville Elementary’s young scientists have been busy doing hands-on investigating.
Kindergartners had to figure out how a boat can float.
According to teacher Jeann Pysz, “They each got a ball of clay and put it in water and of course it sank. They had to re-form it so it wouldn’t sink. We read about how The Pilgrims took the Mayflower to America and how heavy a boat like that would be. They came up with reasons why it didn’t sink – which was pretty funny.”
Fourth graders investigated how differences in lava types explain differences in the shape and eruption patterns among volcanoes. In the activity, students experimented with “lava” of different thicknesses to solve the mystery.
Fourth graders also dissected owl pellets. Owl pellets are a regurgitated mass of small bones and other undigested parts of the bird’s food. The classes were treated to an assembly from Wildlife Tree House to see real owls.
