March 2021 – Two Collinsville High School seniors have been chosen to receive $500 scholarships from the Latino Roundtable of Southwestern Illinois.
America Gutierrez-Trejo and Claudia Claudia De La Cruz will each receive a 2021 $500 scholarship. In previous years, the scholarships were awarded on the day of the Fairmont City Easter Egg event. However, due to public health restrictions this year, the event has been cancelled. The recipients and their families are invited to receive the scholarships at the Fairmont City Library on Saturday June 19, 2021 at 12:00 p.m.
The Mission of the Latino Roundtable of Southwestern Illinois is to work together in developing and expanding available resources to improve delivery of social services to the Latino Community through networking, advocating and providing services.
“We started offering college scholarships a few years ago to encourage hard working, first generation college Latino students to continue their education,” said Chairman of the Latino Roundtable of Southwestern Illinois Katie Heaton.
“This year we had 4 students apply, Heaton continued, “The Latino Roundtable membership reads over their applications and essays and votes on those they feel most deserve assistance to continue their education. All answers included in the application and essays are considered when choosing the winners including the students’ GPAs, community service involvement, annual household income and first generation college student status.”
Heaton said America and Claudia were chosen because they demonstrate excellence in education and community service.
