Dear Parents/Guardians of Students receiving Special Education Services,
I would like to take a moment to update you on the impact of the mandated school closure due to the
COVID-19 pandemic in regards to your student’s IEP. First and foremost, it is our goal to ensure that
students’ physical health and social/emotional needs are being met during this time. This is a very
stressful time for everyone, students, teachers and parents alike. All of our daily routines have been turned
upside down, support systems have been significantly altered, and at this time, there are still many
unknowns. Please know that your Kahok family is still here to support you and your child.
Outlined below you will find questions and answers that I hope will alleviate some of your concerns
regarding your child’s education and special education services during the school closure.
What can I expect regarding communication for my child’s IEP services?
Special education staff will continue to reach out to you to discuss how your child’s learning will be
supported and how IEP services may be affected and/or provided remotely. IEP services may be
completed in a variety of alternate means including but not limited to consult services, phone
conferencing, and video-conferencing. Your child’s case manager and any related service provider that
works with your child will collaborate with you to determine to what extent that services can be provided
remotely in an appropriate manner without causing additional stress.
Will IEP meetings continue to be held during the school closure?
Yes. IEP meetings will continue to be held via phone conferencing and Google Meets. IEP Teams will
make their best efforts to ensure that meetings are held according to their due dates. IEP Coordinators will
be contacting you with Google Invites for your student’s IEP meeting.
Will special education initial or re-evaluations continue to be completed during the school closure?
Evaluations will continue, as best they can when the validity of the evaluation can be maintained in order
to answer the referral questions and provide important data to guide good decision making for your child.
If your child is in the process of having an evaluation completed, someone from your child’s evaluation
team will contact you to discuss the planned evaluations and if any changes may be needed. If face to face
assessments are needed and are unable to be completed due to social distancing, the evaluation must be
postponed until school resumes.
Please know that our staff is dedicated to supporting your child during this time and they truly miss
seeing your child on a daily basis. While we are not able to physically be in classrooms at this time, we
are still here to provide support for your student’s academic and social emotional needs. Your patience is
greatly appreciated as we work through this new phase of instructional delivery via remote learning. We
will continue to work through any challenges that may arise together even though we are physically apart.
If you have questions or concerns after being contacted by your child’s special education case manager
and/or related service provider, the CUSD 10 Office of Special Education will be available to work
through those with you. As we are also practicing social distancing and abiding the shelter in place order,
the best method of contact is via email at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Ali Underwood
Director of Special Education
