For the second year, CUSD 10 is hosting Gearing up for Kindergarten nights for all incoming kindergartners and their families.
“These nights allow for incoming kinders to meet the teachers at their home school, tour the building as well as receive a fun goodie bag of items they can do at home to help build readiness skills,” says Ginger Schantz, Renfro kindergarten teacher and one of the coordinators of the Gearing Up initiative.
“Our hopes are to reach out to all of the new families and allow them the opportunity to start their educational journey with less anxiety. This time also allows teachers and school principals to discuss some of the things families can do during the summer, like practice cutting and using a pencil,” says Mrs. Schantz. “We are excited about meeting the new families and developing a positive relationship before the school year begins.”
“It is essential that kindergartners feel successful from their first day through the rest of their school years,” adds Schantz.
Gearing up for Kindergarten features several steps to help acclimate students (and families) to the new school year: Gearing Up for Kindergarten Night, Meet the Teacher Night and Parent Orientation. The first day of school is also broken down so students can transition gradually in a smaller group with parents on hand for a short time in the morning.

Collinsville School District’s mission is to create a school environment where the children are intellectually challenged in ways appropriate to their individual strengths, needs, and experiences. By securing a partnership between parents, staff and students, we will instill an enthusiasm for learning and a respect for self, others, and property. This will be accomplished in a friendly, positive and safe environment that will enhance each child’s learning.
