May 2021 – In May of 2020, Dorris Intermediate School student Lyric Walton initiated a service project that has helped young girls like her deal with a private, potentially embarrassing problem: the need for feminine hygiene products while at school.
Lyric’s mother, Kourtney Walton said, “She was motivated to do this after I suggested she keep a pack in her locker/backpack in case she would ever start at school. She asked if we could make one for every girl in DIS and it took off from there.”
Thanks to generosity from the community, Lyric assembled and donated 760 Emergency Kits for Girls to CUSD 10 schools. The bags are kept by school nurses and are available to students upon request.
For summer 2021, Lyric hopes to grow her project and provide more bags to district schools. For information and to support her project, check out her Facebook page: Lyric’s Emergency Kits for Girls Summer Project and Amazon wish list. Lyric also collects unwanted IPSY and similar cosmetic/beauty bags to hold the the feminine hygiene kits.
